Following is the summary for all of the excellent replies I received from my
request for information on where usability appears in the org chart at other
companies. At Ofoto, information architecture and user experience design
lives in the Products group under our Creative Director.

BTW: I am not the same Jennifer Fleming who wroten "Web Navigation" though
I'm sure she'd appreciate all of the wonderful compliments you've been
giving her.

----

"I work for a small-but-rapidly-growing software startup. Our engineering
organization consists of multiple software teams (each focused on a
particular subsystem of our product), a QA group, an engineering support
group, and a user experience group. The user experience group contains (or
will contain) interaction/interface design, technical pubs, graphic design
and web development (i.e. "front end" development). The organization is
currently flat (I am the acting team manager), but will eventually have a
director-level individual running the group reporting to me. Outside of
engineering, we have (or will have) a web producer and a small team of
designers/developers working for marketing that will be responsible for the
external website (separate from the meat of our product offering), along
with the development of demo applications that serve a
marketing/sales-support purpose.

As it turns out, the org chart doesn't have much correlation to the
day-to-day work habits of the team. We use a modified xp process where QA,
developers, techpubs and UI designers collaborate closely. At this point in
our company's development, I don't think establishing strong organizational
deliniations makes much sense."

"Usability, Information Architecture and Design fall under our User
Experience group.

Technology is the other major group which includes Project Management,
Business Analysis, Engineering and Development."

"I am the sole usability person at a dot.com. Although I am not a designer,
I am in the art department because interface design originates there. The
art department is part of Marketing & Operation, operations constituting
most aspects of site content."

"Our Information Architecture group is a part of the Creative Department
here at Modem Media, as it was where I worked previously, at Ogilvy
Interactive. I think you will find this true of most interactive agencies"

"UI/IA was the transition between Marketing-who created the PRD and
development who implemented our designs."

"To answer your question about organizational structure, I can give you my
experiences with the companies I've been with. At Kodak, our usability
group was part of QA. This was not an ideal place for us, because
development teams constantly confused us with QA and would bring us into
projects at the very end of the development cycle for our "seal of
approval." It was a constant battle to educate others about our services
and methodologies.

The Kodak Rochester Human Factors group was part of R&D. They actually were
more research-based than our group, so their placement in the org chart made
sense to me.

At HealthGate I was a "one-woman-show", placed in the development group.
This was a better situation - I was able to influence development because I
was part of their division (there were some political issues between
development and marketing, so marketing had a tough time getting development
changes made)."

"I work in a co. that designs communication systems. My position (HFE) is
in
the Engineering Support Group. Important to note though, I don't work on
"web design" but rather on software and hardware design pertaining to
communication systems. However, many aspects of web design pertain to
software application design as well."

"I work for a small (30-person) startup, doing user-interface
design, mainly. I also work on the UI code (arguably not a
Good Idea, but we're too small to specialize). So I am in the
engineering group. I work closely with the tech writers (we
have 2). While we talk loosely about the writing group and the
engineering group as if it were two entities, in fact, the
writers and the engineers report directly to the same manager.
It's a pretty flat organization. I would expect that as we
grow, engineering, UI/usability, and doc groups might start to
form, but I think we would all report into the engineering manager.
This is typical of all the organizations I have worked for,
large and small. My own background includes both documentation
and development, with heavy doses of UI design and usability evaluation.

When I first interviewed with SiteScape, they knew they needed
serious UI work but were not sure where it fit. I talked with
the marketing director and the engineering manager, and between
the three of us we agreed that the position should be in engineering.
I was certainly more comfortable with this as I had always worked
for engineering groups. And we're still small enough that the marketing
folks and I (and anyone else!) can just yell across the room to each
other!"

"In my experience, I have found UI/IA jobs under both Engineering and Design
(usually a sub-division of Marketing or Technology). Although, I would say
that the most functional location was in Design (Design as its own dept, not
under Marketing). I found this the best location due to the creative
collaboration that can develop when the visual and UI/IA's work together
(not to mention a better workflow)."

"I am a producer/product manager and the only person who seems specifically
concerned with usability besides our graphic designer. I'm currently working
on a redesign of our product, attempting to make it simpler to use!"

"I am a part of the creative team, with the implementation designers, visual
designers, brand strategists, and copywriters. I report to an art director,
then a project architect and project manager.

"Currently in the organisation I am in we are trying to integrate usability
activities into our development process. I'm an undergraduate student, 3
weeks from graduating, and working at a large Australian (large for
Australia!) web development company as the sole Usability Specialist.
Indeed the last 5 months have been challenging - you can't immediately
dismiss the way other people (e.g. graphic designers, programmers) work, and
you need to respect their disciplines, otherwise it will just result in a
backlash. Also, those who are not familiar with usability may be
apprehensive of the role of the Usability Specialist at first.

More to the point, one way of integrating (for web development), would be to
have others in the organisation take on responsibility for usability as
well. Business Analysts (or those responsible for producing a Functional
Specification document) should be talking to users during their requirements
gathering stage, not just clients and stakeholders. As many designs as
possible should be evaluated as early as possible to identify usability
flaws. This may need to be done by the Usability Specialist. The Graphic
Designers need to become familiar with visual design and visual
communication principles. Marketing and Products departments I'm not
particularly familiar with, however 'ease of use' should be a characteristic
of products promoted by them. It may take a while to 'sell' usability to
them.

The Usability Specialist primarily acts as a 'bridge' between analysts and
designers, and undertakes several usability activities independently.

"It's been all over the place for me in the corporate world.

At Symantec, it was in the product groups. The web team had to beg and plead
to get their help and resources for the web site since the products
themselves got a lot more attention.

At Excite, the usability folks were in one group, but they sat and reported
into the individual content groups where they did their work-this was
challenging since we couldn't readily share ideas with one another.

Finally, I'm at a Enlighten where there is an Information Architecture team
and usability fits here."

"usability is a part of creative. which is in product development.

marketing is far away."

"We fit into 'Products and Marketing' as a separate business unit (Interface
Development Team), so we tend to work pre-IT build and post-build (not
subservient to IT)."

"we are all gods and / or rebels and therefore cannot be held by mere org
charts"

"excellent question, and very applicable
to the time in our industry.

        currently information architecture resides
        in the Creative Department.

my opinion. it should reside in it's own
distinctive group. this way the members of
        this group (usability experts, information
architects, etc, etc.) can focus on the
pure fundamentals of usability, and how
it permeates business practice, brand, and
        vice versa."

"I am VERY interested in this topic as well and look forward to your
summary.
Our company has just over 100 employees and we recently formed a User
Experience group consisting of:

- group manager, also acts as project manager
- senior information architect
- content manager
- html coder
- usability test engineer (QA)

Our hole is usability testing and analysis. We are currently evaluating the
benefits of outsourcing vs. bringing someone in-house.

UX is part of the product development organization (about 30 total), which
is our largest organization and includes developers and traditional QA."

"CSC is a big company with many organizations. In my organization
we are matrixed to projects that need us. We are kind of like
internal consultants.

Other CSC organizations handle it differently."
