IEEE Sensors Journal Special Issue on
“Advanced Sensors and Sensing Technologies
for indoor positioning and navigation”

https://ieee-sensors.org/sensors-journal/sensors-journal-special-issues/

Many services, such as personal navigation, search and rescue, robot and fleet
management, healthcare would greatly benefit from ubiquitous, accurate, robust
and seamless positioning technologies. While mature GNSS solutions exist for
outdoor spaces, more than ten years of research and development of sensing
technologies have not yet led to a widely available offer of generic and
affordable standard solutions for indoors. Nonetheless, year after year the
insight that researchers have offered into indoor localization provides

About the Research Topic:

Human beings are interactive and socially engaged, as they often gather and communicate in either dyads or groups. During such interactions, each communication partner is providing a variety of information, including general information/content, as well as personal and relational information. These communication aspects and information are truly on display in group interactions or multi-party interactions.

26th International Conference on Auditory Display

Virtual Conference

25-28 June 2021

THEME: “SOUNDING BOARD”

In addition to being part of the resonating chamber in a musical
instrument, the term sounding board is also a metaphor for a channel
through which ideas are discussed and disseminated. ICAD, established in
1992 has, through its 25 conference meetings, shared over 1,150 papers with
the auditory display community. This year, the conference will offer itself

*EUSSET-IISI Lifetime Achievement Award*

IT artifacts pervade almost all aspects of our daily lives, so much so
that almost all our day-to-day practices involve interaction with them.
A radical re-thinking of the computing field which recognizes the

shifting from an exclusive concern with hardware and software to aspects
of the human, social, and organizational contexts within which
information and communication technologies are both being designed and

Hello,

A new episode of the HRI Podcast is available:

The Laws Of Robotics

In our previous podcast episode The Good Robot we discussed the difficulty of enabling robots to act ethically. When talking to journalists or policy makers about machine ethics you frequently get the response, well, Issac Asimov already solved that problem with his three laws of robotics. These laws are so seductively simple that most will intuitively understand them. In this episode of the Human-Robot Interaction podcast, Sean Welsh and I will have a close look at these laws and try to understand why barely anybody has

Commensality means "the practice of sharing food and eating together in a social group''. This social phenomenon, that is gaining increasing attention from diverse research communities, has been found to, among other effects, influence food choices, time spent eating, amount of food consumed, and the enjoyment of food, as well as triggering positive emotions. Recently, the first attempts to computationally address various social aspects of “eating together” appeared, giving rise to the new research topic of Computational Commensality. For example, newly developed sensors allow the collection of high quality data of commensal behaviors and user experience

Reinforcement Learning for Humans, Computer, and Interaction: An Online Workshop at ACM CHI 2021

In computer science, reinforcement learning (RL) is the problem faced by an agent that must learn how to act in a sequential decision environment. Recently, RL algorithms have emerged as a key technology for a range of purposes including modeling people and machine intelligence. However, if RL is to have a meaningful impact in human-computer interaction then it is critical that these two threads are integrated. This is required for genuinely interactive RL-based systems which take into account user capacities and preferences. Interactive RL systems will

Global energy demands will no longer be met using conventional energy

The shift from conventional energy sources towards sustainability is clear,
leading to the emergence of prosumers (i.e. producers and consumers) which
are capable of both generating and consuming energy. Today, many buildings
are now equipped with solar panels that can contribute to the overall
energy needs. Power systems need to adopt renewable energy to provide more

The Future Conversations workshop at CHIIR’21 looks to the future of search, recommendation, and information interaction to ask: where are the opportunities for conversational interactions? What do we need to do to get there? Who stands to benefit?

The workshop will be hands-on and interactive. Rather than a series of technical talks, we are soliciting position statements on opportunities, problems, and solutions in conversational search in all modalities (written, spoken, or multimodal). We will also solicit responses to these statements, to kick-start discussions at the workshop. Statements and responses can be anonymous if you prefer.

Subject: Cycling@CHI Workshop Call for Participation Bicycles are becoming
an increasingly important means of transport in many cities as they
complement or replace the car or public transport. Besides increasing
numbers of cyclists, we see new forms of transportation (e.g., e-scooters)
sharing not only interaction-related aspects with them but also the bike
lane. As this development continues, safe mobile interaction on the ride
through suitable and effective user interfaces is needed. In the past,
researchers have proposed a variety of novel interaction methods. Many of
which have not made it into consumer products yet. One reason is the

Still time to submit to and join us in our 2nd (virtual) MEEC WS (https://meec-ws.com/) at CHI 2021, where the goal is to collaboratively sketch and define effective and ethical means of elicitation, sensing, and annotation of human emotions.

A fundamental challenge here is the momentary emotion elicitation and capture (MEEC) from individuals continuously and in real-time, without adversely affecting user experience nor breaching ethical standards. Announcing a call for papers for our special topic issue, Novelty Effects in Human-Robot Interaction, in Frontiers in Robotics and AI:

Research on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) has long acknowledged the existence of the novelty effect, positive and robust interactions due to the newness and uniqueness of engaging with a robotic interactor. As most participants in HRI research have little experience with robots or robotic behaviors, the novelty effect of that interaction will impact the other basic and complex effects of the robotic behaviors and qualities that HRI researchers examine. Thus, it is likely that any measured outcome of a human-robot

Dear HCI colleagues,

2020 needed us to work from home but through the challenge, we learn.
When testing and exploring technology or its designs, when we do user research, we very often need to meet people... this changed in 2020.

We invite you in this call to share your experience of this change: http://ixdea.uniroma2.it/inevent/events/idea2010/index.php?s=102&link=call48fs

*** CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ***
Building websites requires a very specific set of skills. Currently,
the two main ways to achieve this is either by using a visual website
builder or by programming. Both approaches have a steep learning
curve. Enabling people to create websites by drawing them on a
whiteboard or on a piece of paper would make the webpage building
process more accessible.
