CSCW 2020 Workshop: *“Decolonizing Learning Spaces for Sociotechnical

*Submission deadline: September 20, 2020.*

As spaces for learning about Computer-Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW)
research and practice become more diverse, there is a pressing need to
revise the universal collaborative and pedagogical structures supporting
them. Specifically, it has become urgent to explore how to ‘de-center’
dominant assumptions about who learns in these environments. Our workshop
aims to collectively explore how to craft learning spaces that resist
universality by recognizing and valuing other perspectives and realities.
We will consider systemic roots of

Special Issue of ToCHI on Digital Touch:
Reshaping interpersonal communicative capacity and social touch practices

Guest editors: Sara Price, Carey Jewitt, Nadia Bianchi-Berthouze, Jürgen Steimle

We are at a tipping point for digital communication: moving beyond ‘ways of seeing’ to include ‘ways of feeling’. Much as optical technologies transformed sight and the visual (e.g. from the telescope and microscope, the X-ray, photography, film, computer graphics, MRIs to Google Glass), the rapid expansion in digital touch technologies appears set to reconfigure touch and the tactile in significant ways. Advances in haptics, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR)

Dear colleagues,

The proposed symposium (to be held virtually Nov 13-14 2020: https://ai-for-socialgood.github.io/ ) builds upon our continued efforts in bringing the AI community members together to address the social good problems, under the broader umbrella of United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Also, the lessons from our last year’s successful AAAI Fall Series symposium on AI for Social Good and the 2015 AAAI Spring Symposium on Structured Data for Humanitarian Technologies will further strengthen this year's program.

Unconscious Computing through Emerging Wearable Systems

https://www.mdpi.com/journal/information/special_issues/unconscious_comput_emerging_wearable_syst

Overview
--------
What if future wearable systems would blend information and attentional cues into the perceived surrounding environment in a barely noticeable way, so as to not disturb ongoing thoughts and actions, yet influencing everyday microdecisions of the individual (or group)? This is both a scary and intriguing vision, and emerging wearable technologies are pointing in this direction: personal digital systems designed to communicate to unconscious cognitive processes, thus bypassing reflective thought, with the intention to trigger behavioral change

Special Issue AIEDAM Thematic Collection Vol. 35 No. 3

https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/ai-edam/cfp-data-enabled-design

Today’s societal challenges in fields such as healthcare, mobility or sustainability are complex since they involve high contextual interdependence, scalability and a large number of stakeholders with dynamic objectives and requirements. Designers are well-known complex problem solvers. However, traditional design methods do not allow for creating the necessary systemic understanding of the behaviors of different people and how these behaviors could be or will be changed through design interventions. Moreover, designers lack ways to measure existing trends

Online Workshop NordiCHI: Empowering Children’s Critical Reflections on AI, Robotics and Other Intelligent Technologies

New workshop date: October 26th

https://sites.google.com/view/nordichi2020wsai/

Robotics, automated systems and AI are gradually shaping novel techno-social realities especially in educational contexts. However not enough space is being given to a critical reflection on the emerging ethical and social implications for designers/developers and the users, especially children. This workshop aims at creating a space to discuss the current practices and the near future opportunities for the support of children’s reflections related to robotics, automated systems, and AI implied in educational environments.

As augmented reality (AR) technologies become more pervasive, there is a growing interest in Social AR systems designed to support face-to-face interactions. We define Social AR as the use of AR technology to initiate, support, encourage, or mediate in-person interactions of two or more people. This technology typically involves digitally augmenting or transforming what people see or hear. However, little is known about how Social AR technologies shape and affect social interactions in face-to-face settings. At this early juncture, it is crucial to

We are researchers from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign studying how instructors use criteria-based team formation to form teams in their courses.

You are eligible to participate in this survey study (IRB #19827) if you teach a course in which you form teams using a criteria-based approach. For example, you might form teams based on characteristics of your students such as demographics, working styles, or prior experiences. This process might be accomplished using a team formation tool such as CATME Team-Maker or by hand. If you form teams randomly or by letting

*CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Beyond Checklist Approaches to Ethics in Design
[Workshop at CSCW 2020]*

(Apologies for any cross-posts)

Website: http://EthicsInDesignWorkshop.wordpress.com
<http://ethicsindesignworkshop.wordpress.com/>

Recent public discussions about technologies and social values have called
for greater consideration of ethics during technology development and
deployment, leading many organizations to create and promote compliance- or
checklist-oriented toolkits and frameworks to address values and ethical
issues. However, surfacing discussion and consideration of ethics in
broader, more open-ended ways during the design process may help surface
unique needs, social corner cases, or new or different understandings of
values and ethics.

We invite you to attend our online workshop at NordiCHI 2020 (25th -29th of Oct.) on Strengthening human autonomy in the era of autonomous technology. Contemporary perspectives on interaction with 'autonomous things'.

The aim of the workshop is to address the role that human autonomy presently receives in HCI research and how "autonomous technologies" might challenge, rather than facilitate human autonomy. We acknowledge a need for new ways of understanding HCI and interaction design as digital technologies develop. In this workshop, participants are invited to a discussion where the autonomous human-being-who can act

Dear CHI community,

My PhD Student, Derianna Thomas, is investigating the opinions held on devices used for augmented reality. The survey (linked below) takes an average of 12 minutes to complete, taking up to 30 minutes for those with more experience. Opinions from those with AR glasses experience are of particular importance, however opinions from everyone, including those who have not used AR before, are welcome. Those who wish to can be entered into a prize draw for a £25 Amazon voucher at the end of the survey.

At this early juncture, it is crucial to reflect and discuss the ethical, political, societal, and privacy implications of Social AR. This workshop to be

CSCW 2020 Workshop:
“Decolonizing Learning Spaces for Sociotechnical Research and Design.”

We will consider systemic roots of how learning spaces for socio-technical
research are setup, ways in which they can

Friends of CHI:

We had SIGCHI’s first Ask Me Anything (AMA) session last week, and here's a summarizing Medium post<https://medium.com/sigchi/sigchis-ask-me-anything-ama-sessions-de47afb15e50>. This week, Shaowen Bardzell and I, VPs at Large, will be holding our second AMA. We welcome questions from you all re: our community support mechanisms, SIGCHI CARES, as well as other equity and inclusion efforts. We would also like to hear from you how you think we, and the SIGCHI EC overall, might support the SIGCHI community better.
