3-7 August 2020, Virtual Online Event

http://www.podc.org/
Twitter: @podc_disc

FORMAT

PODC 2020 is held online as a virtual event.

Every paper's talk is pre-recorded and about 20...25min. These talks will
be available online, e.g., in a dedicated Youtube Channel. Second, during
each conference session, there are live 5-min presentations (3 min for BAs)
on each paper, followed by Q&A, and followed by a common discussion among a
"panel" of the presenters and the audience. An additional chat is
organized for 1-1 exchanges. Each such session takes about 1h.

near-additive spanners and near-exact hopsets. The authors survey common
results and proof techniques, and point out open questions.

Multiple PhD positions in distributed computing are open at Telecom
Paris, Institut Polytechnique Paris

RESEARCH TOPICS

Maintaining consistency and availability of data in a dynamic
distributed system subject to hardware failures and security attacks is
one of the most important problems in computing. The plethora of
recently proposed blockchains implementing public, totally-ordered
”ledgers of transactions" address this problem in a system where
multiple mutually distrusting users share data and exchange assets, and
some users may cheat and collude. The service, however, must be
consistent and available to the honest users. Research questions to be
tackled

http://www.disc-conference.org/wp/dijkstra-prize/

Nomination deadline: March 15, 2020

The Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing is named for
Edsger Wybe Dijkstra (1930-2002), a pioneer in the area of
distributed computing. His seminal works on concurrency primitives
(such as semaphores), concurrency problems (such as mutual
exclusion and deadlock), finding shortest paths in graphs,
fault-tolerance, and self-stabilization are important foundations
upon which the field of distributed computing is built.

In this project we want to dramatically change the way Internet Services are constructed. We have already started to achieve significant gains in efficiency (about 7x), that come with substantial improvements in bandwidth (reaching and exceeding 100-Gbps with commodity server hardware) and latency (low and with low variance). You can get a more detailed view of the work by looking at our NSDI '18,

Machine learning is applied today in a wide range of applications from self-driving cars to recommenders. While many works in the area have focused on improving the quality of machine learning algorithms, we believe that efficient ML goes with revisiting system issues with respect to storage, computation, distribution, failure resilience and privacy. The selected postdoc researcher will work towards the design and implementation of efficient distributed systems for ML in collaboration with PhD students and international collaborators.

I'd like to follow up on the topic of possibly moving to multiple
submission deadlines per year, which was briefly mentioned at the DISC
business meeting. This would address the issue that PODC and DISC
deadlines are fairly close to each other, leaving a very large gap
between DISC and PODC without good choices for DC submissions. In
addition, this would provide more flexibility regarding when to hold the
conferences. In particular, we could consider colocating DC conferences
with the goal of reducing overall travel and, by extension, ecological

Large-scale distributed storage systems play an important role in the

The Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing is named for
Edsger Wybe Dijkstra (1930-2002), a pioneer in the area of distributed
computing. His foundational work on concurrency primitives (such as
semaphores), concurrency problems (such as mutual exclusion and
deadlock), finding shortest paths in graphs, fault-tolerance, and
self-stabilization are important supports upon which the field of
distributed computing is built. No other individual has had a larger
influence on research in principles of distributed computing.

Hello,

It looks like I should have funds to hire one (or maybe two) new
postdocs in my group at MIT starting in late summer or early fall,
2019. The areas of interest now are algorithms for wireless networks,
robot swarms, and biological systems.

To fit this position, you should be seriously interested in systems
that are highly dynamic, flexible, robust, noise-tolerant,
adaptive...The actual math will involve dynamic graphs, mobile node
models, etc. There will be plenty of probabilistic analysis.

The 2019 Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing

http://www.podc.org/dijkstra/
http://www.disc-conference.org/wp/dijkstra-prize/

Nomination deadline: March 30, 2019

The Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing is named for
Edsger Wybe Dijkstra (1930-2002), a pioneer in the area of distributed
computing. His foundational work on concurrency primitives (such as semaphores),
concurrency problems (such as mutual exclusion and deadlock), finding shortest
paths in graphs, fault-tolerance, and self-stabilization
are important supports upon which the field of
distributed computing is built. No other individual has had a larger
influence on research in principles of distributed computing.
