CALL for PARTICIPATION
The DESIRE 2011 Doctoral Consortium will precede the 2nd Creativity and
Innovation in Design Conference and it will take place in Eindhoven, the
Netherland on the 18th of October 2011. The Doctoral Consortium will provide
a supportive atmosphere where PhD students can present their
research-in-progress for an open discussion, under the guidance of an
interdisciplinary panel of experienced researchers. The colloquium offers
students the valuable opportunity to receive feedback and perspectives from
recognized experts in the field, and to engage with fellow researchers.
The strongest candidates will be far enough into their PhD to have a
concrete proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and
proposed research methodology. Preference will be given to applicants who
have ample time before thesis submission to incorporate feedback received at
the colloquium.
IMPORTANT DATES
Submission deadline: 8 August 2011
Acceptance notification: 1 September 2011
Camera-ready deadline: 15 September 2011
Doctoral colloquium: 18 October 2011

FORMAT
The DC will be a seminar-style event taking place the day before the DESIRE

constructive discussion amongst the panellists and DC participants. In
order to provide such individual attention, the number of accepted DC
participants will be limited to ten.
SUBMISSION
Topic scope is the same as those listed in the DESIRE conference call for
papers. The submissions for the doctoral consortium should consist of the
following:
1. Research summary. A two page research summary describing the work in
progress, and including a 100 word abstract. Things to consider for
inclusion in the research description are: motivation that drives the
dissertation research, the original idea or thesis statement; the problem
domain and the specific problem addressed; a brief overview of related work;
the methodological approach and its rationale; results to date and their
validity; dissertation status and plan for completion, current and expected
contributions.
2. Appendix 1. A 30 word (2-3 line) summary of the topic and contributions
to it.
3. Appendix 2. Student biographical sketch, including the names and
affiliations of the research advisor(s), the date that the student began
their PhD programme, and the expected date of dissertation submission.
4. Appendix 3. A concise CV (1-2 pages).
All of the above should be submitted via EasyChair, at
https://www.easychair.org/account/signin.cgi?conf=desire11, in a single PDF
format following the template available at
http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates. Research
summaries will be reviewed by the chair and panel members.
DURING AND AFTER THE DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM If accepted, an applicant may be
expected to make clarifications and improvements to their research summary
by the camera-ready deadline. Please note that the camera-ready version will
be due by 15 September 2011 and will not include the Appendices. Accepted
participants will be expected to contribute to the discussion by giving and
receiving thoughtful commentary with an eye towards shaping the field and
upcoming participants in the field.
Accepted Doctoral Consortium abstracts will available in the ACM Digital
Library.
