2nd Workshop on Software Engineering and Architectures for Realtime Interactive Systems (SEARIS)

SEARIS provides a forum for researchers and practitioners working on the design, development, and support of realtime interactive systems which span from VR, AR, and MR environments to novel Human-Computer-Interaction systems and entertainment applications. After a successful initial SEARIS workshop in 2008, this first follow-up proceeds to establish a sustainable community shaping a common understanding, deriving common paradigms, developing useful and necessary methods and techniques, and fostering new ideas.

This year's workshop builds on our previous experiences at SEARIS 2008 and fosters an interactive, discussion-like exchange format as opposed to rather traditional paper presentations. 

Various hot-topics have been identified from the current scientific discussion and will be presented and discussed in different panels. Panelists will have the opportunity to present short statements on these topics and discuss them with the other participants. This format will allow us to develop a deeper understanding of detailed technical issues and to compare existing approaches with regard to specific questions and issues.

The following main categories and related topics will be of special interest:

-†††† Basic Concepts: data-flow-oriented, object-oriented, component-based, scene graph(s), etc.
-†††† Abstraction: entity centered design, world descriptions, semantic modeling
-†††† Reusability/Extensibility: plugins, components, modules, extension points, etc.
-†††† Programming: class libraries, scripting languages, declarative languages
-†††† Architectural Issues: operating systems, platform independence, networking, distribution, etc.
-†††† Adaptivity: support of configurability, personalization, adaptation
-†††† Behavior: support and integration of behavioral components (physics, AI, etc.)
-†††† Implementation and Testing of Realtime Interactive Systems
-†††† Performance: consideration of evaluation strategies, latency, synchronization, etc.

The target audience of the SEARIS workshop includes researchers and developers from VR/AR as well as from technically close fields like ambient/pervasive computing and the computer games community. This year, we invite you to present one or more contributions in the following two styles:

Position Statements and Research Papers
Authors can submit one or more short papers (2-4 pages), each one covering topics of interest of one category. From the accepted papers, key topics will be selected for short (3-5 minutes) thematically grouped presentations followed by an immediate discussion. It is possible to submit several short papers for an existing approach or system, addressing for example the mechanisms of reusability and architectural issues.
A complementary poster session will accompany the panel with presentations illustrating compact overviews on systems and their architecture or architectural concepts. Authors have to submit a compact 2 pages summary of their system or concept.

During the workshop we will encourage the active participation of the audience, in order to concentrate and enlighten the discussion. 

Please do not provide pure feature oriented manual like descriptions of your systems. During the workshop we want to discuss the inner workings and mechanisms of RIS, the implementation strategies and conceptual thoughts. In addition, when talking about adaptation, behavior or semantics please focus on the technical aspects and software engineering issues.

All submissions should follow the IEEE Computer Society format. Submissions for the position statements or research papers should be 2-4 pages long. Submissions for the poster should be 2 pages long.

Please include all author and contact information in your submission. Additional materials (text, video, pictures, XML files etc.) are welcomed to support the submission. Unless clearly indicated otherwise, submission of a workshop contribution and associated materials implies permission for a publication on the Web.

Notification of acceptance:	February 16th 2009

The submissions will be published electronically. From the submissions and the discussions at the workshop, inspiring contributions will be selected by the organizing committee and invited to write an extended version of their paper for post proceedings with ISBN.
