Call for Papers for the 5th International Workshop on Pervasive Mobile
Interaction Devices (PERMID 2009)
- Mobile Devices as Pervasive User Interfaces and Interaction Devices -

Workshop at Pervasive 2009 (May 11-14 2009)
Nara, Japan
permid2009.organizers (at)

Mobile devices have been established as an important platform for Pervasive
Computing and as such have become part of our everyday lives. Most people
carry mobile phones, smartphones or PDAs with them almost anywhere and at
any time. So far these mobile devices have mostly been used for phone calls,
messaging and organizer functionalities. However, mobile multimedia
features, device-integrated sensors and improved data transfer capabilities
are expanding their use to ever increasing application areas. The ubiquity
of mobile devices in everyday life and their usage as personal,
context-aware computing platforms make them a relevant topic for research on
Pervasive Computing.

Interaction research on pervasive mobile devices is a rather young and
rapidly developing field. As mobile devices are used in a diverse and
dynamic context, they offer great potential to develop new interaction
methods and applications for Pervasive Computing. They can serve as
mediators between the virtual and the physical world, as accessible user
interfaces for smart environments, or platforms for location or
context-aware applications.

In the year of its 5th anniversary, PERMID 2009 seeks to continue the
sequence of previous, successful PERMID workshops that have been organized
in conjunction with the Pervasive conference from 2005 to 2008. During these
last 4 years, PERMID has had a solid track record of interesting,
high-quality presentations and lively discussions with 20-25 participants
each year.

Possible topics for the workshop include (but are not limited to):
- Interactions between mobile devices and the real world
- Interactive, context-aware services on mobile devices
- Augmented, virtual and mixed reality on mobile phones and PDAs (tracking,
markers, visualization, applications, etc.)
- Mobile devices as user interfaces for terminals, vending machines and
public displays
- Devices for mobile interaction (e.g. portable music players, gaming
consoles, UMPCs) beyond mobile phones and PDAs
- Multimodal interaction taking mobile devices into account
- Using integrated sensors (camera, microphone, GPS, etc.) of mobile devices
for mobile interaction
- Interaction metaphors for pervasive applications and services
- Gathering, management and usage of context information on mobile devices
- User experience, user studies and evaluation methods targeted at mobile
- Applications and scenarios for the use of mobile devices as interaction

Important Dates:
- February 16, 2009: Deadline for the submission of workshop position papers
- March 9, 2009: Notification of acceptance
- March 30, 2009: Deadline for preparing camera-ready copies
- May 11, 2009: Permid 2009 workshop at Pervasive 2009

- Christian Kray (Newcastle University, UK)

The main goal of the workshop is to develop an understanding of how mobile
devices (especially mobile phones, smartphones and PDAs) can be used as
interaction devices, in particular to interact with a pervasive
infrastructure or ubiquitous services. We will provide a forum to share
information, results, and ideas on current research in this area.
Furthermore we aim to develop new ideas on how mobile phones can be
exploited for new forms of interaction with their environment. We will bring
together researchers and practitioners who are concerned with design,
development, and implementation of new applications and services using
personal mobile devices as user interfaces.

Workshop Format:
The workshop will feature presentation of research results, ongoing work,
ideas, concepts, and critical questions related to the use of mobile devices
as user interfaces in the real world. Every presentation will be followed by
a corresponding discussion. Furthermore we invite the presenters to show
their demonstrators during their presentation and in the breaks.

Participation & Process:
The number of participants should be limited to 25 people. Prospective
authors are invited to submit their contribution, in PDF format conform to
the ACM SIG Proceedings format electronically to permid2009.organizers (at) no later than February 16, 2009. Each submitted paper will be
reviewed by the organizers. Based on these reviews, the organizers will
select about 10 papers for presentation at the workshop. Papers should have
a length of not more than 4 pages.

The proceedings of Permid 2009 will be either published as a technical
report of the University of Munich (ISSN Number) or as part of the workshop
proceedings which will be provided by Pervasive 2009.
