CALL FOR PAPERS. MOBILE SPATIAL INTERACTION
Special issue of Personal and Ubiquitous Computing:
Co-edited by Peter Fröhlich, Rainer Simon, and Lynne Baillie (ftw. Telecommunications Research Center, Austria)

The use of geo-referenced information on the web has recently received increasing interest in the research community and the public. People use interactive maps to share their favorite places with others, and they use geo-browsing services for planning their vacation. Spatial information is even more useful in mobile situations, because it is directly related to the user's surroundings. This idea of "Mobile spatial interaction" (MSI) is becoming increasingly relevant, feasible and desired.

MSI can reach beyond location. It can include cues about situation and orientation towards the surrounding environment. 3D models of the land- and cityscape can facilitate the identification of meaningful spatial objects - not just position coordinates. Recent HCI research has proposed interesting approaches on how to add a sense of orientation and space to mobile interaction. This includes the access and modification of information attached to physical places, navigation and wayfinding, as well as mobile virtual and augmented reality.

Location and orientation sensing hardware is being integrated into a growing number of handsets and can be expected to be even more widespread in the near future. At the same time, geographic information systems and 3D models are becoming more sophisticated. This growing technological maturity promises revolutionary mobile next-generation applications.

The special issue 'Mobile Spatial Interaction' in the Journal 'Personal and Ubiquitous Computing' has been inspired by the great interest in the first workshop on this topic, which was organized in conjunction with CHI2007 (see http://msi.ftw.at). We would like to see a deepening of the discussion and a more thorough analysis of the field. Among other possibilities, this may be approached through accounts of user studies or real-world deployment of MSI user interfaces, or through the development of new theories, concepts and paradigms for the new types of MSI interaction and applications that can be realized.

SUBMISSION TOPICS
Original research results and concepts on the following topics are encouraged:
   - Generalized and comprehensive approaches to MSI
   - Methods and ideas for the identification of application scenarios
   - Modeling concepts for geo-spatial (end-user) content creation
   - Conceptual designs and scenarios of spatially-aware interaction
     techniques
   - Field testing methods and results for spatially aware applications
   - Augmented/parallel reality concepts in gaming, arts, tourism, etc
   - Mobile social applications and services involving interacting with
     content created by others
   - Indoor navigation and spatial awareness
   - Combination of spatial interaction with gesture-based interaction
   - Multimodal integration, e.g. by adding spatial audio, touch, or scent

Please note that the MSI special issue focuses on interactions with information attached to the surrounding space. Pure gestural interaction with a device is therefore explicitly excluded from the scope of this special issue.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
In preparing manuscripts, authors should follow the ACM Personal and Ubiquitous Computing 'Instruction for Authors, which can be found at:
