You'll see the same disclaimer in Windows NT 4.0 about using Java
applications. Microsoft says it will invalidate the fault-tolerancy of NT if
you are using NT as your OS in a safety-critical system. Having worked in
the defense industry since 1982, nothing surprises me any more. While up at
Boeing Defense & Space in Seattle doing compiler evaluations for a NATO
contract, I mentioned we had a product under consideration that came with a
Java compiler. The next question from a USAF officer was "Could we do the
AWACS software in Java?". He was an Ops 'crew dog' and didn't know any
better.

About flying on a plane where you wrote the software ... while working on the
Seawolf submarine steering and diving software, they threatened to take the
development team out on sea trials when doing the submergence tests. If it
doesn't come back up, they paid the price. When she finally did go to sea, a
friend emailed me and said "It worked!", referring to the sub going down and
coming back up. That would have been a trip!!!

If I keep having problems with my current Ada compiler, I may just have to
learn C.
