ACM SIGCHI (Special Interest Group on Computer Human Interaction) and
ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design)
announce an inaugural FORUM to forge new ties between designers of
interactive systems, product designers and industrial designers. We
anticipate a stimulating two-day discussion with invited speakers,
hands-on design exercises and case studies.

We invite CASE STUDIES about designing a product or service for
presentation at the FORUM.

Important criteria for selection of case studies in the FORUM are:
  * the process of creating the product or service includes a
prototype or final design which can be shared with the audience. We
are interested in sharing different approaches to the design process,
and evolution of the design through the process.
  * the product or service involves the use of digital tools in one
or more stages of its creation, irrespective of whether the product
or service itself includes digital components in its final
production. We are interested in how those tools might contribute to
humanization of technologies during the creative phase of the design
process.
  * in cases where digital components are part of the final product
design we are interested in how these components contributed to the
humanization of the product or service;
  * the design has undergone formal evaluation, whether from
laboratory user testing, feedback from the target user population or
active iterative participation by content experts who are distinct
from the designer population. We are eager to learn of innovative
evaluation techniques as well and how they contributed to humanizing
user's interaction with an artifact.

This FORUM will consider current efforts to humanize technology from
many perspectives. Topics of interest include (but are not limited
to):
   - Healthcare systems and products
   - Robotics and transport*
   - Games, learning and entertainment*
   - Mobile communications*
   - Security and safety
   - Decision support products and systems
   - Universal usability, cultural and social differences
   - Wearables, Sensories, Augmentatives
   - Transparency and Pervasiveness of Computing
   - Sustainability and environmental impact
   - Tools that think for themselves

(*These are also themes of focus in the CHI2004 meeting which will be
held immediately following the FORUM, at the same venue in Vienna.)

The FORUM anticipates lively interaction in Vienna, Austria, among a
group of 200 participants from academia, industry, studio and
laboratories. Case studies which are accepted as presentations
through the peer-review (jury) process will become contributions to
the ACM's Digital Library. We expect many of the participants in
this FORUM will join in the activities of CHI2004 during the
remainder of the week in Vienna.
