The Swinburne Computer-Human Interaction Laboratory (SCHIL) at Swinburne
University in Melbourne, Australia, announces the availability of
postgraduate research awards from January 1999. Applications are invited
from suitably qualified students who wish to pursue research-oriented
masters and doctoral degrees. Non-Australian citizens can apply for

can apply for Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) or Swinburne University
Postgraduate Research Awards (SUPRA).

SCHIL is a Swinburne University research centre residing within Swinburne's
highly respected School of Information Technology. It is the home of the
first Australian Professorship specifically created for the area of
human-computer interaction. SCHIL's research activities include the broad
areas of human computer interaction and cognitive systems engineering.

Current and future research topics include design of multimedia and
internet applications, distributed cognition in high-technology
environments, integration of HCI with software engineering, interface
design for medical information systems, techniques for use-centred system
design, and visual and auditory display design for complex information spaces.

SCHIL includes six academics, several associated researchers, and a growing
number of postgraduate students from diverse backgrounds. Further
information about SCHIL is available at http://www.it.swin.edu.au/schil/
and from Prof Penelope Sanderson ([log in to unmask]) or Dr Steve
