SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PhD RESEARCH IN HCI AND COGNITIVE ENGINEERING

The Swinburne Computer-Human Interaction Laboratory (SCHIL) in Melbourne,
Australia, invites applications from students interested in PhD studies in
the following areas of HCI and cognitive engineering:

o Visual and auditory display design (esp sonification) for complex
interactive systems
o Theories and models for determining information and crew coordination
needs in complex sociotechnical systems
o Process models for incorporating user concerns into software engineering
o Notations for Engineering for HCI
o Cognitive neuropsychological approaches to human-system interaction
o Theoretical and methodological issues in empirical usability testing

We can accommodate approximately four new PhD enrolments in 2001 to join
SCHIL's lively and diverse community of postgraduate students. See our
webpages at http://www.it.swin.edu.au/schil

Students with a background in computer science, information technology,
behavioral sciences, human factors, systems sciences or social sciences are
encouraged to apply. For Australian applicants we require either Hons 1 or
2A degree or a research masters degree. For international students we
require equivalent standing.

Deadline for applications is October 31 2000. Applications should be made
in two parts:

1. Application to School of Information Technology (where SCHIL is housed)
for PhD studies (deadline 31 October). First contact a SCHIL academic staff
member to discuss your application and to identify a general area of
research. See the following URL to download application forms "Application
for Admission to Candidature":

        http://www.swin.edu.au/research/f-pgrad.htm

2. Application to Swinburne University's higher degrees committee for
scholarship support (deadline October 31). See the following URL to
download guidelines and application forms:

        http://www.swin.edu.au/research/f-schols.htm

Australian citizens and permanent residents should apply for the Australian
Postgraduate Award (APA). International students should apply for the
International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS).

In addition, applicants can compete for prestigious Chancellor's Research
Scholarships, which carry a premium stipend plus an expenses-paid six-month
internship at one of several international universities collaborating with
SCHIL. For further information see
http://www.swin.edu.au/research/schols/chancellors.htm.

SCHIL is a research centre housed within Swinburne University's School of
Information Technology in Melbourne (Australia) that is an Australian
centre of excellence for HCI and cognitive engineering. SCHIL is a founding
member node of Australia's ARC Key Centre for Human Factors and Applied
Cognitive Psychology.

In 1999 SCHIL opened the SCHIL Research Centre and Usability Laboratory--a
new wing that includes a state-of-the art usability laboratory, audiovisual
data analysis rooms, and a research common room area. The empirical part of
many SCHIL postgraduate research projects takes part in our usability
laboratory.

More information about SCHIL's activities and academic staff members'
research can be found at:

Best wishes,

Penny Sanderson
