PHD STUDIES AT THE KEY CENTRE FOR HUMAN FACTORS

The ARC Key Centre for Human Factors and Applied Cognitive Psychology at
The University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia) invites applications
from suitably qualified students wishing to enrol for PhD studies in 2004
at UQ in human factors, engineering and aviation psychology, human-computer
interaction, or cognitive engineering.

The target date for applications for admission into PhD studies in 2004 is
31 August 2003.
The target date for scholarships in 2004 (a separate application from the
admission into PhD studies) is 31 October, 2003.

To be considered for admission, candidates should have received 1st class
or 2A honors (or equivalent) in relevant undergraduate studies.

Areas of PhD research supervision in the Key Centre include the following:

         o       Human performance in safety-critical systems
         o       Safety systems, safety culture, and human error
         o       Sonification and auditory display design
         o       Visualisation and visual display design
         o       Cognitive engineering and cognitive work analysis
         o       Supporting situational awareness in mission-critical systems
         o       Applications of human memory research
         o       Training for effective collaborative work
         o       Data mining and conceptual mapping of text databases

Areas of application include air traffic control, emergency response
centres, control rooms, defence and aerospace, security, mining and process
industries, critical care medicine and nursing, health informatics, dynamic
market and trading contexts.

Admission can be through UQ's School of Psychology or the School of
Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. Potential supervisors
include Humphreys, Sanderson, Neal, Smith, Watson, and Miller. There are
also opportunities for co-supervisory arrangements with other academics
from the School of Psychology, School of ITEE, and further schools across UQ.
