CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
4th Annual Summer School on Intelligent Tutoring Systems
to be held at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
Monday, June 28 - Friday, July 2
-----------------------> Free! <------------------------
* An intensive, five-day course focused on the development of intelligent
tutoring systems and tutorial dialogue systems.
* The course will provide both conceptual background knowledge on intelligent
tutoring systems and hands-on experience with state-of-the-art tools.
* This summer for the first time we are adding the use of natural
language dialogue technology as a significant component in the course.
* Participation is free!
* The summer school will immediately follow the ICLS 2004 conference held in
Santa Monica, CA - June 22-26, 2004. See http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/~icls/.
* Application deadline: April 30, Notification of acceptance May 7.
SUMMER SCHOOL CONTENT
We invite applications for participation in an
intensive 1-week summer school on building
intelligent tutoring systems and tutorial
dialogue systems. The summer school will provide
a conceptual background and considerable hands-on
experience in developing computer-based tutors.
FORMAT
The summer school will last five days. Each day
will include lectures, discussion sessions, and
laboratory sessions where the participants will
work on developing a small prototype tutoring
system in an area of math, science, or language
learning. The participants will use state of the
art tools for tutor development and natural
language technology, including the Cognitive
Tutor Authoring Tools (CTAT) being developed at
Carnegie Mellon University and Worcester
Polytechnic Institute, the Carmel Tools for
developing natural language understanding
systems, created at the University of Pittsburgh
and Carnegie Mellon University, and the KCD
Development Toolkit for developing "knowledge
construction dialogues," created at the
University of Pittsburgh. On the last day,
student teams will present their accomplishments
to the rest of the participants, followed by a
"graduation" party. Participants will be expected
to do some preparation before the summer schools
starts.
BACKGROUND READING
For those who would like to get more information
prior to submitting an application, the following
downloadable papers provide background about the
topics, technology, and tools that will be
discussed during the summer school.

Carnegie Mellon University
Dr. Kurt VanLehn
Learning Research and Development Center
University of Pittsburgh
Dr. Maxine Eskenazi
Language Technologies Institute
Carnegie Mellon University
All instructors have considerable experience in
research and development in intelligent tutoring
systems and tutorial dialogue systems. Members of
the team have taught summer schools three years
in a row. All have taught similar material as
semester-long courses. They look forward to the
more intensive, hands-on context of a summer
school.
REQUIRED BACKGROUND
The course is intended for anyone with the
appropriate computational background and
educational zeal to actually build an intelligent
tutoring system. This could include seasoned
edutech researchers, advanced graduate students,
computationally sophisticated teachers and
commercial or military instructional developers.
APPLICATIONS
Applicants should send a curriculum vitae and a
1-page letter explaining why they are interested
in attending and indicating any relevant
experience (e.g., programming, cognitive task
analysis, cognitive modeling, production rule
programming). Email applications are encouraged.
