Greetings.

As of August 1997, George Mason University's Human Factors and Applied
Cognitive speciality will be joined by Dr. Irvin Katz.

Irv is an active member of the CHI community (e.g., many of you know him as
the editor of the CHI'95 proceedings). Irv is also well-known in the ESP
and PPIG community.

Irv comes to us from the Educational Testing Service where he has been
building systems and conducting cognitive factors research into issues such
as the design of on-line assessment for architects and tools for the on-line
design of questionaires (for use by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, among
others).

Prior to ETS, Irv did a post-doc with Yuichiro Anzai where he
looked at the role of diagramatic reasoning in physics expertise.

His thesis work at Carnegie Mellon University (with John R. Anderson) looked at
cognitive factors in learning programming languages, especially the
transfer of concepts and skills between different types of languages.
