         Web-based HCI Instructional Materials (WHIM)

                     A Student Challenge
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Sponsored by Addison Wesley Longman
in support of "Designing the User Interface" (Ben Shneiderman, Author)
with its booksite (Blaise Liffick, Booksite Director)
located at http://www.aw.com/DTUI

During the fall 1997 semester we invite students to develop Web-based
HCI instructional materials (WHIM)to support teaching of Human-
Computer Interaction (HCI) at undergraduate, graduate, and professional
levels. Typical materials might be a set of webpages to illustrate:
  - good and bad use of color
  - consistent vs inconsistent layouts
  - low density vs compact screen layouts
  - broad vs. shallow menu trees
  - user-controlled vs. anthropomorphic interactions
  - alternate visualization strategies

These web pages are preferably interactive and allow readers to
experience or explore the topic in depth. They might contain enough
flexibility to allow users to conduct experiments on themselves or
others.

or the web pages might contain focused information on a specific topic
  - a current review of literature
  - an annotated bibliography or webography (list of websites)
  - a guide to researchers, institutions, or software

These materials might be tied to a specific section or chapter of
"Designing the User Interface", but topics that span multiple
chapters are acceptable. Submissions should be designed for use
and tested on as many platforms as possible.

This challenge is open to part and full-time students at colleges
and universities. Submission will be by email on or before November
15, 1997, with a cover letter describing the project (giving the URL)
and listing the contributors with their contact information. The
panel of judges will review the submissions and make awards by
December 1, 1997.

Winners will receive their choice of selected computing books from
the AWL on-line catalog at http://www.aw.com/cseng

   First place 5 books
   Second place 3 books
   Third place 1 books

The judges will award one First place, two Second place, and up
to three Third place prizes, plus honorable mentions. In addition, if
arrangements can be made, Ben Shneiderman, will visit early in December
a course or campus which produces winning entries.

As time and resources permit, the winning entries will be mounted
on the AWL booksite for "Designing the User Interface". This is
conditional on authors making changes requested by the judges and
providing permissions for use of both original and any copyrighted
materials. All decisions of the judges and AWL will be final,
including the number of prizes to be awarded, and what will go on the
website.

  Panel of judges:

    Ephraim Glinert, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
    Julie Jacko, Florida International University
    Blaise Liffick, Millersville University
