Is there a CHI local sig near you?  Check out the SIGCHI Local SIGs webpage

local sig activity in 20 different countries.)

A sampling of specifics of what is happening in the world of CHI local sigs:


  SIGCHI Italy meets on October 4 in Salerno in conjuction with the
  workshop on "Multimedia Databases & Image Communication" that will
  be in Salerno during October 4 and 5.  The SIGCHI meeting features 3
  presentations on Multimedia Database Interaction.

  SIGCHI.NL will hold two October events.  On the 12th: "HCI and education
  in the Netherlands," Gerrit v.d. Veer, Charles v.d. Mast, Saskia Idzerda,
  & Bernard Weerdmeester.  On the 20th: InfoCare congres "The Human

  SwissCHI's next event will be the Software Ergonomics Annual General
  Meeting on Thursday, October 28th (organiser: Daniel Felix).

  West Sweden CHI announced its prospective beginnings recently.

 Americas (outside USA)

  CapCHI's October 19 program: "Interactive Shoes for the Cobbler's
  Children: TeleLearning Tools for the HCI Community," Tom Carey.

  ToRCHI's 20 October meeting will feature a field visit to IBM'S Toronto
  facility with four talks: 1) IBM UCD Overview; 2) Creating the Company
  Store (usability challenges integrating independent IBM e-commerce
  sites... satisfying conflicting customer requirements); 3) Affordances,
  Setting the Record Straight; and 4) Tools for Doing UCD.

 United States

  BayCHI's program October 12: "A Better Mythology for System Design,"
  Jed Harris & Austin Henderson.  At the BayCHI-Kids October 28 meeting:
  "Smarter Play for Smart Toys: Blending the Virtual and Physical Worlds,"
  Amy Francetic, Helen Shwe, Marcos Vescovi, Mark McCabe, & Subutai Ahmad.

  LA SIGCHI's first October event will be a joint meeting with LAC/HFES.
  The program: "System Design and Legal Ramifications," David Geffen;
  date: October 4.  On the 7th, the two organizations will jointly offer
  a workshop by Linda Novack and Rhoda Pregerson on "Taking the Upset of

  DC_CHI's October 19 program: Lisa Neal on "Asynchronous Distance
  Learning for Corporate Education: Experiences with Lotus LearningSpace."

  CHI-Squared's October 20th meeting: "Overview of the Voice eXtensible
  Markup Language (VoiceXML)" by Ken Rehor of Bell Labs/Lucent

  The October 13th MOCHI presentation: Stephanie Rosenbaum on "Iterative
  Usability Research Methods: Why Testing Isn't Enough."

  KC-CHI presents Jomo Tariku, an Ethiopian designer and artist who will
  share how he approached his web site design from concept to final

  NYC-CHI will feature John Karat on "Overcoming unusability: Evaluating
  speech recognition software" the evening of October 11.

  BuckCHI will meet October 12.  Program: "'Rapidchannel eCommerce
  System Design and Usability' Rapid development of usable business to
  business ecommerce systems at fourthchannel," Jason Beaumont.

  CHIFOO will meet October 27 (program to be announced); their September
  program: "Anthropometry," Wayne Adams.

  NUCHI's September meeting featured a presentation by Judy Rice on
  "Designing Web Pages For Special Populations ."

  Puget Sound SIGCHI will meet October 20 (program to be announced).

  MilwauCHI's October 5th meeting topic is CHI and UPA highlights.  Liz
  Kuhn will present CHI take-aways from several sessions.  Linda Kohli
  will present several UPA take-aways.  In addition, Carolyn Snow from
  M&I Data Services will present her poster from UPA.
