The local sig sampler, back following a vacation in August, welcomes
GatewayCHI (based in St. Louis, Missouri, USA) to the list of officially
chartered CHI local sigs.

Europe
7 September: 2nd SIGCHI.NL conference "Senses working overtime." Keynote:
Bill Buxton, Less is more (more or less). Other speakers: Dick Rijken,
Who Are You and Where Do We Meet?; Mary Mooney, Color and Interaction;
Roel Vertegaal, Look Who's Talking to Whom. Plus a panel: How do you get
Usability on the management agenda?
SwissCHI will meet on September 24 at 18:30h at Zuerich Versicherung,
Mainbuilding, Mythenquai 2, Zurich, Portierloge. Mr. Walter Stulzer, NOSE
GmbH, presents "Zuerich Explorama: a Presentation of an interactiv Museum."
Africa
Jacques Hugo is continuing his efforts at organizing a local sig in
South Africa and welcomes participation/assistance.
Americas (outside USA)
Janice Singer will be speaking at CapCHI's next meeting on Sept. 16;
Dr. Singer will speak about the work practices of professional software
engineers, and the design of tools to support their work. CapCHI will
also celebrate the re-election of the entire CapCHI executive and the
addition of three new committee members. Plus, CapCHI's logo design
contest continues.
ToRCHI officers have been providing some assistance to students planning
to form the first student CHI chapter based at the University of
Waterloo.
United States
Cliff Stoll will be BayCHI's featured speaker on Tuesday September 8; his
presentation: "A Skeptical View of Computing." Also, registration has
opened for two one-day, BayCHI-sponsored tutorials to be held in November.
LA SIGCHI's next meeting will be Sept. 23. Subject: facilitators and
inhibitors for electronic commerce; format: interviews of three consumers
who have bought something over the internet; location: Citibank Development
Center.
ConnCHI's next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 23rd at
Western Connecticut State University in Danbury and will be hosted by Dr.
Rondall Khoo of the Psychology Department; the topic of the meeting:
"Future Directions of Human Factors in Technology, Usability, and
Training."
Arthur Murphy will discuss design principles and reseach regarding
accessibility for disabilities to Web sites and interactive media at
CHI-Atlanta's next meeting on Thursday September 10th. This event is
hosted by Jack Quattlebaum and the Apple Market Center.
GB/SIGCHI's next program (Tuesday, September 8): "The Year the Internet
Grew Up: An overview of the changes taking place in the Information
Infrastructure," Coralee Whitcomb. And look for GB/SIGCHI's booth at the
upcoming Web 98 Conference/Expo.
TwinCHI will meet September 17th for an informal end of summer meeting.
The group will gather for a dinner where they will break up into informal
smaller groups for 'non-directed' conversation.
KC-CHI's program on September 1: "Real men don't ask for directions -- not
any more!," Richard Branham, Alp Tiritoglu, and Paul Tangen.
GatewayCHI is becoming officially chartered by ACM at this very moment.
BuckCHI's next program (Tuesday, September 8th): "Diagnosis of Data
Overload," Emily Patterson. Location: Fitch, Inc.
In August, Carolyn Gale met with BayCHI's steering committee as part of
her planning for the creation of TennCHI.
LoneStarCHI's September bistro meeting will feature an open discussion
about web design methods, tools, and favorite sites.
