Dear members of the CHI Announcements mailing list,

We invite you to consider a SIGCHI-sponsored conference that
combines the high standards, variety, and intensity of a
CHI conference with the more focused, personal atmosphere
associated with a smaller size and a single-track structure.

Whether you already have a strong interest in intelligent
user interfaces or would like to find out what this area has
to offer, IUI 2005 represents an opportunity to learn and
experience a great deal within a short time.

The conference schedule at the end of this message will give
you a clear picture of the topics covered.

                Best regards,
                John Riedl and Anthony Jameson
                IUI 2005 program chairs

IUI 2005
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INTELLIGENT USER INTERFACES

January 9-12, 2005
Catamaran Resort Hotel, San Diego, California, U.S.A.
http://www.iuiconf.org

The Very Best in Intelligent User Interfaces:

  * Invited talks by Stu Card, Justine Cassell, and Barry Smyth
  * 30 full-length papers, selected from 135 submissions
  * 3 tutorials and 3 workshops on cutting-edge topics
  * Poster / demo session with 28+ presentations
  * Panel discussion about a current usability crisis
  * Social program and networking opportunities
  * Countless stimulating discussions
  * Good weather in mid-January

       -> Early registration through 23 December

The IUI conference series keeps getting better:

  * 40% increase in submissions over the previous record
    year

  * Acceptance rates of 22% and 28% for long and short
    papers, respectively

But don't just wait for the proceedings volume to appear:
Come to San Diego and participate actively yourself!

  1. Hear three thought leaders present their latest ideas
     and innovations in 90-minute sessions with intensive
     discussion.

  2. Discuss the 30 long paper presentations with the
     authors and with other participants - who will all have
     heard the same presentations, because of the
     single-track structure of the conference.

  3. Take a tutorial on a currently hot topic from a team of
     expert presenters.

  4. In the 3 1/2-hour poster / demo session, talk
     face-to-face about late-breaking results with the
     authors of 28 short papers, and try out demos offered
     by long and short paper presenters.

  5. Take part in a panel discussion with four experts on
     the question: Why are high-tech home products often so
     hard to use - and how can intelligent user interfaces
     help?  Audience participation guaranteed.

  6. During the breaks, social events, and the free evening,
     establish and renew contacts with IUI people from
     around the world.

Coming to San Diego for IUI 2005 requires some investment;
but you will learn more about intelligent user interfaces
and the people who make them than you could by reading
articles for weeks.

The full conference schedule will be found at the end of
this message and on the conference web site
(http://iuiconf.org, "Advance Program").

Please bear in mind:

  * The early registration fee is available through
    Thursday, 23 December.

  * The number of rooms set aside for conference
    participants at the Catamaran Resort Hotel is limited,
    so it is good to reserve one as soon as possible. (The
    hotel registration page also includes pointers to other
    suitable hotels.)

We hope to see you - and hear from you - in San Diego this
January.

    - The IUI 2005 conference committee

P.S. To remind your colleagues - and yourself - about IUI
2005, please print the PDF version of the invitation
postcard (http://www.iuiconf.org/IUI05Invitation.pdf, 306K),
which fits on one sheet of normal paper, and hang it
somewhere where it will be seen. - Thank you
