2nd CALL for Participation

Tailoring Cooperation:
Creating a Research Agenda for Tailorable Systems in Cooperative Work
(http://ecscw2003.oulu.fi/ecscw_ws8.htm)

Workshop at ECSCW 2003, 14th -18th September 2003, Helsinki, Finland
(http://ecscw2003.oulu.fi/)

Tailoring is an area of research in HCI & CSCW that combines design and
use of computer systems in a radically new way. Tailoring is closely
related to end-user programming (e.g. spreadsheet development) and a
general term to encompass both endeavours is End-User Development
(http://giove.cnuce.cnr.it/eud-net.htm ).

This workshop addresses tailoring as a technique for systems
development: How to make new systems tailorable (e.g. design for
tailorability) and techniques and tools for evolving tailor-enabled
systems to meet the changing needs of cooperative work practices in
user organizations. Another emphasis is put on the cooperative activity
of tailoring itself; i.e. collaboration between end users and super
users in a user organization to accomplish tailoring tasks and indirect
cooperation between developers and users to simplify the communication
and understanding of tailorable systems.

A goal of the workshop is to report and compare ongoing research and
late breaking news in tailoring and end-user development to the CSCW
community, to explore the challenges and future potentials of emerging
technologies, and to identify new directions for research on end-user
development in cooperative settings.

Although the basic issues of tailoring have been presented and
discussed in the HCI and CSCW communities for some time, there has not
been a systematic approach to map out the field, to identify promising
lines of future research, and to build bridges to larger areas such as
software engineering and information systems. With this workshop we
intend to bring researchers and practictioners together, in particular
those concerned with design, implementation, use, and real life
assessment of tailorable systems from a multitude of perspectives.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

*       Studies on collaborative tailoring and end-user development;
* Tailoring environments, technical support for tailors and
end-user developers;
*       Cooperation among super users and end users;
*       Cooperation among developers and end users;
*       Architectures for flexible and adaptable systems;
* Designing for change: how to anticipate future change and
design for it.

Participants will be selected on the basis of (up to four pages)
position papers. A brief biography describing the reasons for the
interest should be appended. Presenters of accepted submissions should
send a refined (up to) five pages position paper one month prior to the
workshop. The position papers together with a summary of the discussion
at the workshop will be published as a technical report. The organizers
are searching out possibilities of a journal issue dedicated to
Tailoring Cooperation.
