An ARC (Australian Research Council) funded PhD position is available in the following project:

* RESPONSIVE TRANSPORT ENVIRONMENTS: SPATIAL AND VISUAL USER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES TO ALLOW IMPROVED PASSENGER FLOW AND A BETTER CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
Australian public transport environments are struggling to cope with growth in demand. This research investigates a complementary approach to transport infrastructure expansion – and its associated costs, disruption, energy use, and implementation periods – through the use of urban digital technologies to facilitate improved passenger flow and to offer a better customer experience. The study objectives are: to investigate related research and projects in the area; to research user and other stakeholder requirements; to design, deploy and evaluate prototypes in public transport environments.

The project partners include University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney, Arup, Grimshaw, City of Sydney, Railcorp, Transport NSW.

* SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS AND OPPORTUNITIES
The scholarship provides a yearly tax-free stipend at the APA rate (currently A$ 27,200) for a period of three years. Further to this the scholarship covers the university fees (for national students) and the stipend provides funds both during semesters and over breaks.

The PhD position will primarily be based at the University of New South Wales, and will include regular travel to the University of Sydney and University of Technology Sydney. The position also provides strong industry connections and placements within our partner organisations.

The PhD student will have the opportunity for project-related fully supported international travel to present their work at conferences and/or site visits.

* START DATE
The research project will commence June 2012, and ideally the candidate will be ready for an immediate start.

* ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA

The successful candidate would likely identify with one or preferably more of the following fields: interaction design, HCI/HRI, architectural design, mechatronics, computer science or similar.

This scholarship aims to attract an outstanding PhD candidate whose skills should include at least some of the following:
-    Some programming exposure e.g C++ / Java / Openframeworks / Max MSP / etc.
-    Rapid prototyping e.g. Arduino / Phidgets / Customised Electronics / etc.
-    Physical prototyping e.g. Mock-ups / Models / etc.
