Adaptive and adaptable information systems enable intelligent, personalized access to the internet or to databases, personal agents advise customers in virtual shops, adaptive learning systems learn together with students in order to provide optimal support tailored to the individual student's learning process.

ABIS is the SIG Adaptivity and User Modeling in Interactive Systems (Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen) of the German Informatics Society (GI).

The ABIS-Workshop has been established as a highly interactive forum for discussing the state of the art in personalization and user modeling. Latest developments in industry and research are presented in plenary sessions, forums, and tutorials to discuss trends and experiences.

In particular, we plan to offer tutorials, invited talks and discussion sessions on the following topics:

* creating adaptive applications with AHA! (3.0) by Natalia V. Stash, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands
* TRUSTEE: combining privacy and personalization in e-commerce by Herbert Stoyan, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany
* evaluation of adaptive systems by Stephan Weibelzahl, Fraunhofer IESE, Germany
* personalization and the semantic web by Nicola Henze, University of Hannover, Germany

Submissions from research and industry within the broad area of User Modeling and Adaptive Systems are welcome. Special emphasis is on submissions in the following areas:

* User Modeling methods and techniques
  o adaptive navigation support
  o adaptive presentation
  o adaptive orientation support
  o context sensitive help
  o interpretation of user behavior and user feedback
  o machine learning for user modeling
  o evaluation of adaptive systems
* Adaptive Applications
  o information systems
  o adaptive learning environments and intelligent tutoring systems
  o adaptive hypermedia
  o adaptive semantic web
  o knowledge management
  o electronic commerce
  o personalized interaction in mobile, ubiquitous and context-aware computing
* Cross-sectional topics
  o security and privacy aspects in the management of user data
  o embodied animated agents
  o support of collaboration and group modeling
  o engineering adaptive systems
  o affective computing

We strive to have a diverse group, varying from young researchers working on Master or PhD level to experts in the field. The workshop aims to provide a platform for exchanging fresh ideas and expertise, and for obtaining feedback on ongoing research.

The ABIS-workshop will take place from October 4th to 6th as a joint week of workshops on machine learning, knowledge discovery, knowledge management, adaptivity, and user modeling (LWA04) in Berlin. Responsible for the organization of the workshop is the SIG ABIS of the German Informatics Society. During the workshop the SIG ABIS will held its regular election for the steering commitee members.

Important dates

* submission deadline: July 19th, 2004
* notification of authors: August 10th, 2004
* submission of final versions: August 29th, 2004
* LWA-workshop: October 4-6, 2004

Submission categories

* full papers: full papers are detailed descriptions of scientific work. Length: up to 6 pages (including references)
* short papers: short descriptions of ongoing or beginning work, topics for discussion, positions papers, thesis descriptions. Length: up to 3 pages (including references)
* demonstrations: demonstrations of running systems should give an overview of a system's tasks and features within a timeslot of 30 minutes. Please submit a summary of the system. Length: up to 2 pages (including references)
* project proposals: by this new category we offer the opportunity to present project proposals in process. Please submit a draft version of the proposal and a one-page summary. Submissions will be accepted or rejected without formal review process and will not be included in the proceedings. Accepted proposals will be presented at the workshop and be criticized by the audience. Thus, your proposal might benefit from the experts' remarks.

Full papers, short papers and demonstrations should be written in English. The workshop language will be English and German depending on the audience and the situation.

Submissions should be formatted according to the template provided at:

Please upload your submission in PDF-format at by selecting ABIS in the form.
