Hi!
I'm working on a web application. One of the clients request that we add a
function to allow users to use Enter key to advance fields so that the data
entry can be faster using the numeric key pad.

We are considering using a switch to turn this feature on/off. However,
there are two concerns:

1. The common behavior on the web/web application is to use Tab key to
advance fields after entering data and Enter key to trigger a button action
on the same form, such as Login. If we allow the user to use the Enter key
to advance fields, the Enter key will not only advance the fields but also
will trigger an action when the focus is on the action button. The tab key
will only advance the fields and place the focus on the action button when
gets there as it is now. Is this behavior understandable or confusing?

2. Currently, the Enter key is used for carriage return in large text areas.
If the Enter key is used to advance fields, it cannot be used for carriage
return.

Any comments, opinons, anecdotes or study data are appreciated.

Thanks!

Cindy Lu
