CALL FOR WORKSHOP PARTICIPATION

Privacy and HCI: Methodologies for Studying Privacy Issues
CHI 2006 WORKSHOP
April 23, 2006
Montreal, Canada

http://www.privacymethodologies.tk

DATES:

Position paper submission deadline: Friday, January 6th, 2006
Notification of acceptance: Monday, January 16th, 2006
Workshop: Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This workshop aims to reflect on appropriate methodology to
empirically study privacy issues related to technology by drawing
upon both theoretical perspectives as well as practical experiences.
Successful as well as failed empirical investigations can be quite
illuminating for this purpose. Some of the topics the workshop plans
to address include: appropriateness of a given methodology for a
given setting, advantages and disadvantages of different
methodologies, bias issues, cultural and legal influence on privacy
practices, mismatch between user preferences and actual user practices.

The workshop will be conducted in two 3-hour sessions. The first
session will involve presentation/discussion of select position
papers chosen by workshop organizers and participants. The second
session will require participants to work in groups to discuss
methodological issues in one of several scenarios.

The workshop aims to bring together a diverse mix of researchers as
well as practitioners from the fields of: HCI, CSCW, psychology,
sociology, anthropology, computer science, and interaction design.
Those interested in participating are invited to submit a position
paper up to 4 pages in the SIGCHI Format (http://www.sigchi.org/
chipubform/). Papers may address any theme relevant to the topic of
the workshop - ranging from descriptions of specific experiments or
studies, to analysis of strengths and weaknesses of a particular
methodology, to methodological challenges posed by a particular
domain. Organizers will strive to create a diverse mix of individuals
from academia and industry in order to derive varied perspectives
regarding privacy.
