IDIAP Research Institute, which is part of the EPFL Doctoral School, is
seeking candidates for Ph.D. student positions in human-centered computing.

In the context of the EU-funded AMIDA project (Augmented Multiparty
Interaction with Distance Access) we are investigating novel techniques in
human-centered computing for improving communication and collaboration
between humans in face to face and remote settings. In particular, we are
interested in investigating the integration of multimodal input and
multimedia processing (e.g., automatic speech recognition, recognition of
actions from video, etc.) from a human-centered perspective (i.e.,
considering factors such as cognitive load, memory, attention, engagement in
remote settings, etc.) in building personal assistant systems for a variety
of face to face and remote settings. Examples include the following: graphic
visualizations of activities of people one is communicating remotely with,
display of on-the-fly "summaries" of face to face or remote conversations
using automatic speech recognition; instant-replay of utterances or
conversation segments at various speeds; memory aids, etc.

The successful candidate will have a Masters degree in Engineering, Computer
Science or a related field, and proven skills in designing and developing
interactive computer systems. Knowledge of multimedia processing is
desirable, but not a requirement as this position will focus on the
exploration of novel interactive applications enabled by speech, audio
processing, and Computer Vision rather than signal processing itself.

Positions are open immediately. This research is part of the large EC-funded
AMIDA Consortium jointly coordinated by IDIAP and University of Edinburgh,
as well as the Swiss National Center of Competence in Research on
Interactive Multimodal Information Management (IM2). Selected candidates
will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at our various
international partner institutions in a dynamic work environment.

IDIAP is located in Martigny, a scenic region in the south of Switzerland
near the borders with France and Italy, surrounded by the highest mountains
of Europe and offering exciting recreational activities, including hiking,
climbing and skiing. It is close to Montreux, Lausanne, and Geneva, making
it one of Europe's most attractive, central, and culturally active
locations. Although Martigny is in the French speaking part of Switzerland,
at IDIAP the working language is English. Free French lessons are provided.
