(Like some other people, I misinterpreted Alastair's question as referring
to in-page links. This was my suggestion:)

We used Javascript to highlight anchor text briefly to make in-page links
less confusing to the user. For example, on FAQ pages that typically rely on
in-page links:
http://www2.marksandspencer.com/help/registering
(This page opens in a smallish window, so it scrolls quite far.)

This technique was inspired by 37signals' "yellow fade" tip.

As for links on a page that simply reloads the current page, we try to avoid
that whenever possible. The "current" menu item should be de-linked as well
as highlighted. But I don't have test data to back this up; I'd say it's a
pretty non-critical measure.
