Following on from the success of the first HCI&IR workshop in 1996, this
workshop will present work in progress and completed work in areas
addressing issues between the classic fields of Human Computer Interaction
(HCI) and Information Retrieval (IR).

It is intended to publish the proceedings of the workshop. Further details
are available from the workshop organiser (author information at

The workshop will be held on Glasgow University's main campus - a short
underground journey from the City centre (see below) and will start at 1030
with coffee from 1000. The standard fee for the workshop is £50 (students,
HCI Group / IRSG / BCS members, and speakers £40 - proof of status will be
required). This includes registration and printed extended abstracts. To

Directions to The Workshop
The workshop will be held within the Computing Science Department at the
University of Glasgow (17 Lilybank Gdns, phone 0141 330 4256).
Glasgow has two main city centre rail stations (served by ScotRail,
Strathclyde Transport, Virgin and GNER) - the most likely to come into is
Glasgow Central which is also the hardest to find the underground from (but
its not that bad) the other is Glasgow Queen Street.
If you're arriving by air there are two airports: Glasgow International
which is about 15km west of the centre and Glasgow Prestwick which is
nowhere near Glasgow but is used for some cheap flights. The best flights
to Glasgow are by EasyJet, British Airways and British Midlands from London
and KLM UK from Amsterdam. Ryanair fly to Prestwick (someone has too!).
From Glasgow airport its under 15 pounds in a taxi to the dept (Lilybank
Gardens, off Great George St, off Byres Rd) or you can bus to the city
centre, or you can bus into Paisley and get a train from their - bus is
probably easier. Then get to an underground or rail station and follow
details below. From Prestwick, there's a train to Glasgow Central.
Driving from the airport...
M8 to junction 25 then take Clyde Tunnel cut off, go through the Clyde
Tunnel using the left lane. There is an immediate left turn, skip this, but
fork left afterwards (about 100m after exiting the tunnel). Then fork right
and stay in that lane - you swing up and over the road you were on then
swing round and onto the A814 to the City Centre and SECC. The road
continues up over a junction and the speed limit changes to 50MPH, take the
next cut-off onto the B808 heading for Partick. You have to do a shimmy at
this junction but are basically heading for a road parallel and left of the
one you have come off (near enough straight on but left a bit). Follow the
B808 to traffic lights and carry on straight - you should now be in Byres
Rd. If not, stop and ask someone for Byres Rd - everyone (except the first
person you ask!) knows where it is. Once in Byres Rd continue up to traffic
lights junction with University Avenue, carry on North until just after
Hillhead Underground station (on your right) then turn right into Great
George Street. Lilybank Gdns is on your right about 300m up Gt George.
Glasgow Central to St Enoch Underground
Get off your train and head to the main concourse area. Looking left to
right you should see some shops, the ticket offices, a big exit, John
Menzies, a bar, a wee exit, the gent's loo, and Casey Jones burger bar. You
should take the exit between the bar and the gent's loo.
This takes you down onto a main road which you should turn right down.
Carry on down passed HMV & Virgin to a main cross roads with MacDonalds,
Dunkin' Doughnuts, Kentucky Chicken and Pizza Hut (useful place for a quick
snack this junction!). Cross the junction until you are outside Pizza Hut
and then carry on passed the main doors of Woolworths and GAP(the road with
Pizza Hut and Kentucky Chicken marking the ends).
Just passed GAP is an opening with a large Underground station - this is St
Enoch.
Queen Street to Buchannan Street Underground
Much easier than above, get off your train and head to the end of the
platforms. Turn right and go passed the ticket offices. Go out the doors at
the end into a taxi rank and go diagonally forward to the right to get to a
moving pavement into the Underground.
Underground to Hillhead
That about says it, there are only two choices of "line" - both follow the
same route but in opposite directions. You should get off at Hillhead.
Hillhead Underground to Comp Sci.
Come out the Underground and turn right, then first right into Great George
St and go up passed a lovely wooden toy shop, a car park and a bit of
garden. The row of terrace houses is Lilybank Gardens and Computing Science
entrance is the furthest away (No 17).
