Hybrid Optical and Wireless Access Networks (HOWANs) consists of a
multi-hop wireless mesh network (WMN) at the front-end and an optical
access network, e.g., a passive optical network (PON) at the back-end.
PONs use inexpensive and passive optical splitters to divide a single
fiber into separate strands feeding individual subscribers. EPON is based
on the Ethernet standard, which comes with the added benefit of the
economies-of-scale of Ethernet, and provides simple and easy-to-manage
connectivity both at the customer premises and at the central office. A
wireless mesh network (WMN) is a communication network made up of radio
nodes organized in a mesh topology, which is reliable and offers
redundancy. The mesh architecture sustains signal strength by breaking
long distances into a series of shorter hops. Intermediate nodes not only
boost the signal, but also cooperatively make forwarding decisions based
on their knowledge of the network states. Compared with pure WMNs or PONs,
HOWANs provide a more cost-effective way for broadband access network
infrastructure and integrates the benefits from WMNs and PONs. For
example, the reliability, robustness and high capacity of PON is
integrated with the flexibility and cost saving of wireless networks.
However, as a hybrid of two distinct networks and technologies, HOWANs
post a lot of challenges for routing, survivability, service provisioning,
QoS, and network design and optimization.

The First International Workshop on Hybrid Optical and Wireless Access
Networks (HOWAN 2009) is a unique event for discussing open issues on
original research results in the areas of architecture, implementation,
optimization and applications of Hybrid Optical and Wireless Access
Networks (HOWANs).

The scope of this workshop is to act as a catalyst for a thorough overview
of hybrid optical and wireless access networks by providing a forum for
academia, industry and standardization organization. Therefore, the
workshop will focus on the near- to mid-term architecture, applications,
algorithms, and deployment.
We solicit papers covering various topics of interest that include, but
not limited to the following. All tracks are open to both research and
industry contributions.

Multi-hop wireless mesh networks
Passive optical networks
Node architecture and design of hybrid optical and wireless networks
Emerging wireless/optical applications
QoS management for hybrid access networks
PON and WDM-PON network experiments
Radio over Fiber (RoF)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE AUTHORS
The HOWAN 2009 papers will be in the INTERNET 2009 Proceedings, published
by IEEE Computer Society Press, and posted on-line via IEEE XPlore Digital
Library. IEEE will index the papers with major indexes.

Notification                               April 25, 2009
Registration                              May 10, 2009
Camera ready                           May 15, 2009
Only .pdf or .doc files will be accepted for paper submission. All
received papers will be acknowledged via an automated system.
Final author manuscripts will be 8.5" x 11" (two columns IEEE format), not
exceeding 6 pages; max 4 extra pages allowed at additional cost. The
formatting instructions can be found on the Instructions page.

Once you receive the notification of paper acceptance, you will be
provided by the IEEE CS Press an online author kit with all the steps an
author needs to follow to submit the final version. The author kits URL
will be included in the letter of acceptance.
