CARMEA '06: International Workshop on
Collaborative Authoring of Rich Media Applications

to be held in conjunction with INFORMATIK 2006
in Dresden (Germany), October 2-6 2006

http://www-mmt.inf.tu-dresden.de/carmea
====================================================

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: June 30, 2006

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES AND TOPICS
Future rich media applications will feature seamless integration of various
media types, substantial interaction capabilities as well as personalization
and adaptation to various contexts. The contexts of use are not only be
determined by heterogeneous target devices, system and network capabilities.
They also comprise the user's current location, motion, degree of activity,
preferences, habits, experiences, social and cultural factors, current
weather conditions and many more. Examples for this type of applications are
mobile location-based services for tourists, interactive home entertainment
and infotainment solutions, complex geographic information systems and
Web-based virtual manuals. As a consequence, applications need to be
implemented in different versions for a huge variety of target platforms,
context conditions and resulting adaptations. Naturally, developers should
not need to care for each case separately. Instead, they should be supported
by powerful authoring tools and multi-disciplinary, even distributed
authoring teams.
Although a number of solutions were already presented in the fields of rich
media formats, hypermedia adaptation and context-dependent applications,
less work has been done on the modelling and authoring side for
context-sensitive, adaptive multimedia applications. From that follows the
focus of this workshop, which is on tool-supported authoring of such
applications, conducted in collaborative teams including various,
potentially distributed experts. New visualization and interaction
metaphors, workflow approaches as well as preview, testing and team support
techniques are required to specify various context dependencies and to
develop appropriate adaptation capabilities for multimedia applications. The
goal of this workshop is to explore this evolving area and to discuss the
current state, challenges and a research agenda in this field among
researchers and practitioners from academia and industry.

Workshop topics that may be addressed in submissions include (but are not
limited to) the following:

* Authoring process and tools for adaptive rich media applications
supporting context dependency and adaptation.
* Extensibility concepts for current authoring environments and seamless
integration of various media types and target formats (e.g. Flash, SMIL,
MPEG-4).
* Authoring of various adaptation variants for multimedia applications and
development of appropriate preview and testing techniques.
* Specification of context dependencies during authoring time, development
of new metaphors to edit context (such as maps for location based
applications).
* Collaborative development of complex applications by various experts in
potentially distributed teams, maintaining authoring awareness.
* Novel visualization and interaction metaphors for authoring tools to
better support collaboration, media integration, context dependency and
adaptation.
* Appropriate process models and integrated approaches for design and
modelling.
* Support of heterogeneous target platforms while minimizing authoring
efforts to produce all possible variants of an application.
* Experience reports on implementing and maintaining complex adaptive
applications.

SUBMISSIONS
Participants are invited to submit either a research paper, experience
report or position statement, which will be reviewed by the program
committee.

* Research papers should describe original and high quality research work
within the scope of this workshop. Papers are expected to be up to 7 pages
long.
* Experience reports shall describe experiences and lessons learned with
implementing and maintaining real world applications. Submissions are
expected to be papers of 2 pages.
* Position statements can describe research questions, practical problems,
claims, novel ideas etc. and should be presented on 1 page.

Accepted workshop papers are published in the conference proceedings of
INFORMATIK 2006, appearing within the GI-series Lecture Notes in Informatics
(LNI). Please see http://www-mmt.inf.tu-dresden.de/carmea for further
submission details.
