Call for Participation: DESIGNING ROBOTIC ARTEFACTS WITH USER AND
EXPERIENCE-CENTRED PERSPECTIVES
http://www.sics.se/~majac/workshop/
We would like to invite participants with technical, social science and
design interests to participate in this one day workshop hosted at
NordiCHI<http://www.nordichi2008.org>, october 19, 2008.
Deadline for submissions is August 20.
Workshop overview
The aim of this workshop is to investigate how methods, techniques and
perspectives from the field of HCI could contribute to developments in
the area of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). We are interested in how
user- and experience-centred methods and techniques might be applied and
possibly modified to suit the design and study of robotic systems.
Moreover, we hope for the workshop to examine some of the themes and
topics in robotics that may be of potential importance for HCI. For
instance, the physical embodiment of robotic technology and aspects of
autonomy point towards a range of issues associated with human-machine
interaction and, consequently, interaction design. The workshop, then,
will broadly aim to examine the intersections between HCI and HRI and
how the two fields might learn from one another.
To participate
We welcome students, researchers and practitioners active in the areas
of HRI and HCI, as well as from related fields with relevant experience
of working with robots, e.g. industrial design, sculpture, and the
performing arts.
* Application is by position paper no longer than *four pages*,
formatted using the CHI extended abstracts template
<http://www.chi2008.org/chi2008pubsformat.doc>. The paper should cover
an issue that is relevant to the theme of the workshop
<http://www.sics.se/~majac/workshop/themes.htm>.
* Deadline for papers is August 20, selected participants will be
notified on the 1 September. The date for workshop itself is October 19,
2008.
* Papers and any questions should be submitted to [log in to unmask]
* Detailed instructions for how to register will be sent together with
notifications of acceptance.
Organizers
*Ylva Fernaeus*, has Ph.D in Human-Machine Interaction at Stockholm
University. Has published primarily in the areas of tangible interaction
and design of children’s technology. Currently Ylva is working at the
Swedish Institute of Computer Science in the EU project LIREC (Living
with Robots and Interactive Companions).
*Mattias Jacobsson* is a Ph.D student and research assistant of the
Future Applications Lab and is interested in Human-Robot Interaction. He
has recently returned from an internship at Ugobe Labs, Idaho, sponsored
by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. Mattias is also the
project manager of the GlowBots project conducted within the European
community sponsored ECAgents project. Today he is working in the EU
project LIREC (Living with Robots and Interactive Companions).
*Sara Ljungblad* is a researcher in the EU project LIREC (Living with
Robots and Interactive Companions). She has a Ph.D in Human-Machine
Interaction at Stockholm University. She has previously arranged a
workshop “Designing Robot Applications for Everyday Environments” in
Göteborg 2005, where several robot researchers and interaction designers
participated. Sara has also worked on experience-oriented perspectives
on agent- and robot-applications in the ECAgents project, sponsored by
The Future and Emerging Technologies Program of the European Community
(IST-1940).
*Alex Taylor* is a member of the Socio-Digital Systems Group at
Microsoft Research, Cambridge (UK). He has undertaken investigations
into a range of routine and often mundane aspects of everyday life. For
instance, he's had an unhealthy preoccupation with hoarding, dirt,
clutter and similar seemingly banal subject matter. Most recently he has
begun obsessing over robots and other curious ‘thinking’ machines....
