Cooperative Knowledge Spaces for Mathematics, Natural Sciences,
                             and Engineering

                   http://www.mulf.tu-berlin.de/ecscw07.html

    =======================================================================

A Workshop held in conjunction with the

10th European Conference on Computer Supported Co-operative Work
         ECSCW 2007
          http://www.ecscw07.org

          September 24-28, 2007
            Limerick / Ireland

    =======================================================================

    Call for Papers

The collaborative and distributed usage of resources such as remote
experiments and virtual laboratories is highly important especially for
learning and research scenarios in the fields of mathematics, natural
sciences and engineering. Integrated into cooperative knowledge spaces,
those resources can be provided within a unified environment and be combined
with communication tools and content repositories. Thus, an open access to
experimental setups can be achieved. However, only few implementations of
cooperative knowlegdes spaces have been deployed so far and technical
requirements as well as usability issues are still to be discussed.

Questions to be considered include (but are certainly not limited to):

What kinds of communities can be addressed?
What kinds of scenarios can be supported?
What differences to traditional learning management systems can be
determined and have to be considered?
How do "Web 2.0" developments influence cooperative learning?
What challenges occur concerning the hardware requirements on the users'
   and providers' sides?
How helpful are special room concepts visualisation, or game-based
   learning scenarios?

Goals and objectives:
The workshop proposed will bring together a broad audience from different
fields, e.g. software developers, integration technology IT specialists,
game designers and researchers from natural sciences and engineering as
well as pedagogical oriented researchers, thus initialising an inter- and
 crossdisciplinary investigation of the matter.

The results of the workshop will be published in the "New Media in
education and Research Series" by Technische Universität Berlin, Germany
 (eds. Hendricks, Jeschke, Thomsen).

Participants:
We encourage contributions from different backgrounds, especially CSCW/CSCL
developers and practitioners, researchers and teachers of mathematics,
natural sciences and engineering, developers of games and other types of
 virtual worlds.

The workshop will be a half-day event (can be extended if needed) and will
be open to a maximum of 10 participants. Presentations will be 10-15
minutes in length for each presenter.

Agenda: 9:00 - 9:15 Introduction
    9:15 - 10:30 Presentations
   10:30 - 10:45 Coffee Break
   10:45 - 12:00 Presentations
   12:00 - 13:00 Discussions and Closure

Submissions:
Short position papers (1-2 pages) should be submitted to
cikic AT math.tu-berlin.de by June 29th 2007 (extended deadline).
Acceptance notifications will be sent by July 9th 2007.

Important Dates:
EXTENDED submission deadline: June 29th 2007
Notification of acceptance: July 9th 2007
 Workshop September 25th 2007 (half-day, can be
                                                   extended if needed)

Organisers:
The organisers of the workshop are highly engaged in research of
cooperative knowledge spaces. In the ViCToR-Spaces project (Virtual
Cooperation in Teaching and Research for Mathematics, Natural Sciences and
Engineering) at TU Berlin they are currently developing a virtual knowledge
space on top of the existing CSCW/CSCL platform CURE, developed at
Fernuniversität Hagen. ViCToR-Spaces focus in particular on the
service-oriented integration of remote experiments and virtual laboratories
as well as implementing a room concept.

Since 2005, Sabina Jeschke has been associate professor for "New Media in
Mathematics and Natural Sciences" and director of the MuLF Center (Center
for "New Media in Education and Research") at Technische Universität
Berlin. Starting in 2001, her Berlin group has been a driving force behind
the development of multimedia technologies at the university, implementing
multimedia educational elements in the education of undergraduate students,
in particular for engineering students.

In May 2007, Prof. Dr. Sabina Jeschke has taken over a full professorship
for "Information Technology Services" at University of Stuttgart.
Additionally, she is acting as scientific and executive director (CEO) of
the "Center of Information Technologies" of University of Stuttgart.

Sabine Cikic holds a degree in Public and Private Environmental Management
from Freie Universität Berlin. She has been working on the management of
data about contaminated soils at the Office for the Environment of
Berlin-Kreuzberg and IUP Ingenieure GmbH. She recently completed her degree
in Geography, Geology, and Geophysics with a diploma thesis on Chinese
migrants and food in Paris. Since August 2005, Ms Cikic is a member of the
MuLF team. Her research field is focussed on virtually spatial, interactive
and distributed scenarios in eLearning and eResearch.

Nadine Ludwig graduated from Technische Universität Ilmenau with a degree in
Computer Science in 2005. In her diploma thesis she described the
integration of remote laboratories in Learning Content Management Systems
via SCORM. Since May 2006 Ms Ludwig is a part of the MuLF Center at
Technische Universität Berlin as a research assistant. Currently she is
working on her PhD Thesis in the fields of eLearning and eResearch in
Cooperative Knowledge Spaces.

Uwe Sinha holds a degree in Computer Science from Technische Universität
Berlin. After graduation he worked for Berlin-based Ivistar AG where he
developed a web-based facility management system. In 2002 he joined the
MUMIE project at Technische Universität Berlin. In that project a
second-generation e-learning platform geared to mathematics was developed.
Currently Mr Sinha is a member of the MuLF team, working on his PhD thesis
with the research focus on computer-supported cooperative learning in
mathematics, natural sciences and engineering.
