This special section of the International Journal of E-Business Research
contains a selection of the best papers published in the E-Commerce
Technologies track (ECT) of the 20th Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC
2005) held in Santa Fe, New Mexico on March 17, 2005. The last years have
seen an exponential growth and dramatic changes in the field of ecommerce
technologies. The focus of the ECT track is on novel applications for
e-commerce, that is, applications that hold new promises for rapidly
evolving electronic markets. The program committee selected eight papers
after a rigorous review process in which at least three reviewers reviewed
every paper. Out of the eight accepted papers, the authors of three papers
were selected to submit a revised and extended version of their papers to
this special section of IJEBR. These papers represent very different
domains inside the broad field of e-commerce technologies.

SPECIAL SECTION RESEARCH PAPERS

PAPER ONE:

“Scalable Security and Accounting Services for Content-Based
Publish/Subscribe Systems”

Content-based publish/subscribe systems offer an interaction scheme that
is appropriate for a variety of large-scale dynamic applications. However,
widespread use of these systems is hindered by a lack of suitable security
services. In this paper, the authors present scalable solutions for
confidentiality, integrity, and authentication for these systems.
Verifiable usage-based accounting services, which are required for
e-commerce and e-business applications that use publish/subscribe systems,
are also provided. The solutions are applicable in a setting where
publishers and subscribers may not trust the publish/subscribe
infrastructure.

PAPER TWO:

“Analyzing the Privacy of a Vickrey Auction Mechanism”

This article studies the properties of a distributed mechanism to perform
the Vickrey auction. This mechanism, as originally presented in López,
Núñez, Rodríguez, and Rubio (2004), left unanswered questions about the
applicability of the protocol.  These issues are discussed in this paper,
and a simple implementation of the protocol is presented and analyzed.

PAPER THREE:

“Performance Evaluation of Consumer Decision Support Systems”

Consumer decision support systems (CDSSs) help online users make
purchasing decisions in e-commerce Web sites. To more effectively compare
the usefulness of the various functionalities and interface features of
such systems, a simulation environment for decision tasks of any scale and
structure is developed. In addition, three criteria in an evaluation
framework for assessing the quality of such CDSSs are identified. The
simulation environment will enable the efficient comparison of more
advanced tools among themselves, and indicate further opportunities for
functionality and interface improvements.

PAPER FOUR:

“An Exploratory Study of the Design Preferences of U.S. and Chinese
Virtual Communities”

With the increasing popularity of electronic commerce, businesses are
starting to recognize that developing a good virtual community can help to
generate more profits. Virtual communities can be an instrument for
building relationships with customers, and retaining customers’ loyalty.
Of interest are the similarities and differences in the design preferences
of virtual communities across cultural groups. This paper examines the
design preferences of virtual communities in two cultural groups. The
design preferences studied are Web design, tools used, and types of
virtual communities preferred. Content analysis was employed to study 20
of the most popular Chinese and U.S. virtual communities.

PAPER FIVE:

“The Role of Trust in Business-to-Business E-Commerce Collaboration in a
Unique Environment in Australia”

Services, Australia

This article explores interorganizational collaboration in
business-to-business e-commerce, and the factors that influence its
development in a unique Australian environment. Using a qualitative case
study approach, seven informants from four Tasmanian organizations were
interviewed. The data confirmed trust was an important prerequisite for
the establishment and development of both electronic and traditional
interorganizational relationships. Collaborative relations such as
communication and repeated interactions facilitated the development of
trading-partner trust. The results enhance organizational awareness of
similarities and differences between traditional and electronic
business-to-business trading relationships, and contribute to the growing
body of knowledge on interorganizational trust and business-to-business
e-commerce. The influence of the unique Tasmanian environment is
acknowledged and discussed as a mediating variable in considering the
findings.
