Einstein's Alley Overview of Einstein's Alley "Katherine Kish and Louis
Wagman will provide an overview of Einstein's Alley, a non-profit
organization forwarded by Congressman, Rush Holt. The goal of Einstein's

Edmond W. Esraelski, Ph.D., CHFP
Human Factors Manager
Abbott Laboratories

Application of Human Factors Engineering to Medical Product Design to
Enhance Patient Safety "Dr. Israelski will discuss how the user centered
design process is applied to the design of medical products and devices. In
particular, he covers what is unique in the design control process, such as
conducting formal risk analysis and maintaining an auditable design history
file. Because of the safety critical nature of medical products the design
control process for system development is regulated.
The Institute of Medicine estimates almost 100,000 annual deaths in the US
due to medical errors, some of which can be attributed to poor human factors
in design. There are a number of standards that are recommended by
regulators to ensure the proper use of HFE in product design. Standards from
ANSI, AAMI, ISO and IEC are described. The presentation will cover how
Abbott incorporates HFE in its product development process and will show
several examples and case studies."

"Communications technologies have changed rapidly but human needs have not.
It is still difficult to produce effective Human Computer Interaction
solutions without using techniques and tools from several disciplines.
Todd will show us techniques his company has used to improve experiences in
the financial services industry. His company believes that great design
starts with a clear message and ends with measurable improvements for
clients. He will show how high-profile customers, rapid pace, metrics, and
accountability help lead to effective business solutions and improved
customer experiences."

Mark Altom
Technical Manager
Chief Technology Office, Avaya

Creating a Usability Architecture for the Communication Experience "Work is
no longer a 9 to 5 job. Advances in communication technology make it
possible to be reached anytime and anywhere. We work on remote teams that
require virtual meetings, where everyone is multitasking. We each need to
manage multiple contacts on multiple devices. It is easy to be overwhelmed
by too much information, too much email, a constant barrage of instant
messages, and too many voice messages to answer. We need a communication
experience where we can transition seamlessly among different applications
and devices. We also want to control our communication experience, so that
we are contacted when we want, by who we want, and by the device we want.
Mark Altom will discuss ongoing work at Avaya to create a usability
architecture to enable a satisfying and intuitive end-to-end communication
experience."
