*Special Issue*

/The Intergenerational Context as an Emphasis for Design/

* *

*About the UAIS Journal*

* *

The UAIS Journal solicits original research contributions addressing the
accessibility, usability and acceptability of Information Society
Technologies by */anyone/*, */anywhere/*, at */anytime/*, and through
*/any/* */media and device/*. Universal access refers to the systematic
effort to proactively apply principles, methods and tools of universal
design, in order to develop Information Society Technologies which are
accessible and usable by all citizens. The Journal's unique focus is on
theoretical, methodological, and empirical research, of both
technological and non-technological nature, that addresses equitable
access and active participation of potentially all citizens in the
Information Society. For further information, please, refer to the "Aims
and scope" section on the Website of the UAIS Journal.

*Aims and Scope of this Special Issue***

Internet-based, mobile and pervasive technologies provide the means for
older people to establish and maintain intergenerational relationships
over long distances. However the significance of this intergenerational
context has been largely ignored when considering

potential interactions, the design of new interactive technologies often
privileging the younger generation. This special issue aims to explore
the important issues when considering intergenerational contact as a
significant context for design and an important adjunct to notions of
universal access.

Original research contributions are solicited, which focus on
understanding the intergenerational context in relation to technological
artifacts and interactions.

*Main Topics***

This special issue will focus on research work on the design,
development, evaluation, and use of interactive technologies within an
intergenerational context. Authors of submissions should carefully
explain how the work and results presented contribute to facilitating
and promoting universal access.

Contributions are solicited in, but not limited to, the following topics:

· Participatory approaches to designing for an intergenerational context

· Novel intergenerational designs which include the young and older people

· Making interactive technologies designed for the younger generation
accessible to the older generation

· Modeling user diversity across generations (e.g. ‘technology generations’)

· Developing virtual spaces for diverse generations

· The social and psychological issues of intergenerational
technology-mediated communication

· Methodologies for assessing the utility, accessibility and user
satisfaction of technologies in relation to age

· The assessment and impact of Information Society Technologies in terms
of generational access

*Important Dates***

· Intention to submit (a tentative abstract of 100 words): 1^st May, 2009

· Submission of papers: *Revised Date 8^th June, 2009*

· Notification of acceptance: 1^st August, 2009

· Submission of camera-ready version of accepted papers: 1^st October, 2009

· Expected publication date of the special issue: late 2009

*Guest Editors***

· Sri Kurniawan, The University of Santa Cruz, USA

· Geraldine Fitzpatrick, University of Sussex, UK

· Frank Vetere, University of Melbourne, Australia

*Manuscript preparation***

Please refer to the “Instructions to authors” section on the Website of
the UAIS Journal. There is a page limit of 8000 words for long papers
and 4000 words for short papers (excluding the 100-words abstract and
references).

Authors should submit their manuscripts electronically as PDF files to
*[log in to unmask]* Please note that blind submission is not
required.

*Copyright information***

Submission of an article implies that:

    * the work described has not been published before, except in form
      of an abstract or as part of a published lecture, review, or thesis;
    * it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere.
