I'd be very grateful if this could be circulated to the ACM SIGCHI list.

Talking Toasters: the Operation of 'Smart' Devices in the Home
+++++++++++++++++++++
Gadgets have taken over the role of servants in our homes. But how human do
we want these devices to be, and how much autonomy do we want to give them?
Based on her recent paper in Information Society, ³Controlling Smart Devices
in the Home² Lynne will briefly review work done in the Digital World
Research Centre on ³conversational agents² and smart houses. She will then
explore what we can learn from the relationship between employers and
servants in the past.
Lynne Hamill was until recently Executive Director of the Digital World
Research Centre and is now in the Department of Sociology at the University
of Surrey.
