We invite you to apply to participate in the NSF Broader Impacts for
Research and Discovery Summit, http://www.nsfbirds.org/, to be held June
21-23, 2010, in D.C. The Broader Impacts Summit is being sponsored by
the NSF CISE - Computer Information Science and Engineering division and
will have participants representing the three CISE Division research
communities (Information & Intelligent Systems, Computer and Network
Systems, and Computing and Communication Foundations).
The goal of the Broader Impacts Summit is to discuss, present, and
subsequently develop guidance materials for the NSF CISE research
community on how to effectively integrate activities that address the
NSF broader impacts review criteria into their research proposals and
subsequent research. To meet this goal, we are hosting a 2-day summit
where (1) several examples of projects with superior broader impacts
will be presented and (2) working groups will meet to discuss and
document current/future broader impact activities and ways in which
infrastructure can be established to make it easier for NSF
investigators to improve the broader impacts of their work.
Applications will consist of a brief (no more than 1 page, 12 point
font) description of your interest in NSF's broader impact criteria.
Your description could also include project(s) you have done, or
projects that you would like to do, to increase the broad impact of
your research. For any project discussed, please also state your method
(or proposed method) of evaluating the impact of your activities, as
well as any outcome from completed evaluations. In addition, you must

Notification: by Thursday, May 20th
We expect that participants will stay for the full 2-day summit and
participate in the working groups. A tentative agenda is below. A web
site for the Summit is under construction at http://www.nsfBIRDS.org/.
As you know, the five NSF broader impact criteria are:
1. Advance science while promoting teaching, training and learning;
2. Broaden participation of underrepresented groups;
3. Enhance infrastructure for research and education;
4. Provide broad dissemination to enhance scientific and
technological understanding; and
5. Highlight the benefit to society.
This Broader Impacts Summit is being organized by Tracy Camp (Colorado
School of Mines) and Juan Gilbert (Clemson University), with the
assistance of Samir Khuller (University of Maryland) and Judy Goldsmith
(University of Kentucky), and the guidance of the following NSF officials:

As mentioned, the Summit will take place in D.C., June 21st-23rd, 2010.
We expect the Summit to begin on June 21st at 7pm and end on June 23rd
at 4pm. Most of the sessions will be held at the Waterview conference
center (which is centrally located in Rosslyn, across the Key bridge
from Georgetown).
Summit attendees will stay at the adjacent Palomar hotel.
Attendance will be limited to a maximum of 120 participants. We expect
approximately 100 of the participants to be CISE researchers and 20 to
be NSF officials. Approximately half of the CISE researchers are being
invited to attend; the other half will be determined through this
submission process. Reasonable travel expenses are expected to be
covered by an NSF
Grant.
