Thanks for all the feedback on this. There was one specific point I'd
like to repeat:

> What happens in screen readers where an image is a link with empty "" 
> alt text?

I did try this earlier with IBM Homepage Reader (I'm not sure if this
screen reader has a big following, but it's one I can afford!). HPR then
ignored the photo which is just what was wanted. (Before I used the null
alt tag, it read out the link URL.)

Does anyone know what Jaws does in this situation?
