ACM IDC 2010 is the major multidisciplinary 
international forum where to discuss children's 
needs in relationship to interactive technology 
and present the most innovative research in the 
field of interaction design for young 
people.  Within the context of IDC 2010, the goal 
of this full-day workshop is to bring together 
researchers from a wide spectrum of disciplines 
who share a common interest in understanding the 
challenges of interactive storytelling for children.
A selection of the best position papers will 
appear in IDC 2010 conference proceedings and in 
the ACM Digital Library, and will be considered 
for participating in a Journal Special Issue on 
Interactive Storytelling for Children

SCOPE
Storytelling has always been a means to entertain 
and to educate, to share knowledge and live 
experiences, to give voice to a minority and to 
preserve a social or cultural identity, and is 
pervasive in many aspects of young people 
life.  In early childhood, storytelling is a 
means to support children’s cognitive 
development, to help them assign meaning to the 
world, to enforce the relationships with peers 
and adults. From primary to high school, 
storytelling activities are proposed to students 
in order to improve language and communication 
skills, and to foster interpretation, analysis, 
and synthesis capability. In therapeutic 
contexts, the storytelling paradigm is used to 
create engagement in disabled children and to 
support the development of a wide spectrum of 
cognitive functions and skills. Theme parks and 
museums often offer storytelling opportunities to 
make youngsters' visit more educational and enjoyable.

Storytelling has received increasing interest on 
the HCI and IDC fields: A variety of technologies 
and design approaches have been explored to 
foster new forms of children’s creativity and to 
increase, through interactivity, engagement, 
enjoyment, fun, as well as the achievement of 
educational, cognitive, or interpersonal benefits.

This workshop will explore the design, 
development, and evaluation of interactive 
storytelling for young people from different 
perspectives: the different technologies and 
interaction paradigms; the different profile of 
children (e.g., age, needs); the different 
contexts of use (e.g., school, home, museums, 
therapeutic settings); the different roles of 
children in relationships to interactive stories 
(authors, consumers, or technology designers).

SUBMISSIONS
Keeping in mind that children are our target, the 
following topics will be addressed during the workshop:
·         Novel Technologies and Interaction 
Paradigms for interactive storytelling authoring and consumption
·         Contexts for Interactive Storytelling 
(e.g., regular school environments, home, 
museums, entertainment environments, hospitals, rehabilitation centers)
·         Interactive story “genres”
·         Individual vs. collaborative storytelling
·         The benefits of storytelling for learning
·         The “social” value of storytelling
·         Storytelling in relationship to different ages and special needs

The above issues will be discussed through 
contributions of different types, which are 
preliminarily classified as follows:
·         Innovations in Technology and Interaction
·         Design methods
·         Evaluation methods
·         Case studies as well as completed or ongoing projects
·         Evaluation studies
·         Theoretical and pedagogical frameworks
·         Controversial issues in (and critiques 
of) the current state of the field

Persons interested in participating to this 
workshop are invited to submit a position paper 
to Franca Garzotto <[log in to unmask]> AND 
Amalia Sabiscu <[log in to unmask]> BY APRIL 8th, 2010.
Notification of acceptance will be send by April 
20, 2010. Camera ready versions of accepted papers are due May 3rd, 2010

Position papers must be submitted as .pdf file 
formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI 
Publications Format 
<http://www.sigchi.org/chipubform/> and should not exceed 4 pages.

A selection of the best position papers will 
appear in the conference proceedings and in the 
ACM Digital Library, and will be considered for 
participating in a Journal Special Issue on 
Interactive Storytelling for Children

PLEASE NOTICE THAT:
·         At least one author of each accepted 
position paper must register for the conference 
and the workshop by the early registration deadline (to be announced).
·         Workshop participation will be open to 
any IDC 2010 participant, upon place 
availability. All attendants must register for 
both the workshop and the IDC conference itself.
