A CHI Community for CSCW
We have formed a CHI Community for CSCW. This Community will serve the
various needs, as they arise, of the broader CSCW community. It will
also oversee the annual SIGCHI CSCW conference, choosing conference
chairs, advising on site selection, and considering any policy issues
regarding the conference that may arise. The Community will also
coordinate with conferences that have similar missions or content,
such as GROUP, ECSCW, and any others that attract significant CSCW
content.
Members. Consistent with the guidelines for CHI Communities, there are
three kinds of Members:
•	SIGCHI Member – They may vote and hold elected office. They would
use their ACM Login ID to access their membership.•	ACM Member, but
not SIGCHI – They may hold appointed office, but not vote or be
elected. They would use their ACM Login ID to access their
membership.•	SIGCHI Affiliate – They may hold appointed office, but
not vote or be elected. They can sign up for an ACM Login ID even if
they are not an ACM member.
You can join the CSCW Community by going to www.sigchi.org/communities.
Governance
Elected Positions. There are two elected positions, that of Chair and
Chair-Elect. The position of Chair will be held for two years. The
position of Chair-Elect will be held for two+two years, the first as
Chair-Elect, and the second as Chair. At the outset both of these
positions will be voted on by the membership. After two years only the
Chair-Elect position will be voted on by the membership. The current
Steering Committee (see below) will put together a slate of
candidates, with at least two candidates for a position. These
candidates must be willing to serve if elected. The members of the
Community will be consulted for any additional candidates to add to
the slate of candidates. Such additional candidates must be supported
by at least five members, and must be willing to serve if elected. The
Chair will also serve on the expanded SIGCHI CMC to represent the CSCW
Community.
Steering Committee.  A Steering Committee shall be established by the
Chair, with staggered two-year terms, consisting of at least five
members, including the Chair and the Chair-Elect, that have
representatives from each of the following categories: University,
Industry, North American, Europe, the Rest of the World, a senior
graduate student studying CSCW. At the outset some appointed members
will be for one year, some for two, in order to activate the staggered
terms. Appointed members of the Steering Committee can be reappointed
once. The Committee could be larger than five if necessary to satisfy
these criteria. The members of the Steering Committee beyond the Chair
and the Chair-Elect can be members from any of the three categories of
membership described above. The Steering Committee can determine a
process by which such appointed members are identified, including
consulting with other organizations as appropriate (e.g., the ECSCW
Foundation).
The Steering Committee shall be responsible for the oversight and
governance of the Community. They shall hold an open Town Hall Meeting
at each CSCW conference. They shall communicate via e-mail and/or
website with the membership of the Community. They shall entertain
proposals from the Community for new activities, and shall liaise with
the SIGCHI Executive Committee as necessary for the solicitation of
resources or adjudication of matters of policy.
The Steering Committee shall hold a face-to-face meeting at the annual
CSCW conference. Additional meetings will be convened as needed,
either at a venue where most or all of the Steering Committee is
present, or by audio or videoconference, as appropriate.
Website. The Steering Committee shall create and maintain a web site
for the CSCW Community. Information about the CSCW conference series
and related conferences shall be prominent on the site. Other
activities of interest to the Community should be displayed. The
current members of the Steering Committee will be listed on the web
site. If deemed appropriate, the Steering Committee could take steps
to appoint a Webmaster who would oversee the site.
Community Activities.  While the CSCW conference series is perhaps the
major responsibility of the Community, other activities for which
there is sufficient interest and leadership can be established.
Members of the CSCW Community can submit proposals for such activities
to the Steering Committee. If sufficient interest exists, leadership
is identified, and required resources identified, the Steering
Committee shall approve such activities by a majority vote.
Current Steering Committee:  Gary Olson (chair), Gloria Mark,
Christine Halverson, Volker Wulf, and Hideaki Kuzuoka.  This committee
will be disbanded once a Chair and Chair-Elect are chosen.
