Human Factors Position

Provide usability and usefulness testing efforts and User-centered design
assistance to Compaq Computer Corporation product and services teams.  The
position is located in Littleton MA.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Advise and consult on Human Factors issues as well as conduct research that
will ultimately result in increased customer satisfaction and efficiency in
the use of Compaq products.
*       Develop, plan, and implement successful Human Factors research and
design programs to support product teams within Compaq's product divisions,
and support cross-divisional software efforts.
*       Design and develop test plans for research projects, conduct data
collection and analysis, and develop recommendations for enhancing user
interaction.
*       Communicate results of projects to product teams via presentations,
one-on-one meetings and reports.
*       Create and prototype UI designs for hardware and/or software, using
prototyping software or physical models.
*       Conduct contextual research in various customer environments and
review customer feedback for design of new products.
*       Analyze third-party products being considered for inclusion with
Compaq products for usability and feature sets.
*       Monitor external human factors, ergonomics, and HCI research,
standards, inventions, and trends for potential opportunities for Compaq
products.  Based on this information, develop Human Factors initiatives to
enhance customer satisfaction, product usefulness and usability.
*       Enhance Human Factors expertise and promote professional development
within the Human Factors Group and within Compaq.
*
*       KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
*       Ph.D. or M.S. in Applied Experimental Psychology, Cognitive
Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, , or related HF
discipline.
*       Advanced knowledge of statistics and experimental design is
essential.
*       Advanced knowledge of computer-human interface design and testing
skills is essential.
*       Advanced knowledge of human subject testing procedures, principles
of memory, cognition, and human information processing.
*       Proven empirical approach to Human Factors.
*       Experience in conducting usability testing.
*       Strong ability to communicate orally and in written format, as
evidenced by conference presentations and research publications in
peer-reviewed journals.
*       Demonstrated ability to communicate usability information to other
groups and within HF group.
*       Familiarity with contextual research, participatory design
techniques for hardware and software, and other techniques to develop an
understanding of computer usage in the context of a representative
environment.
*       Experience in design within Web environments, including information
architecture definition or web-based application design desirable.
*       Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas preferred:
speech relevancy, knowledge-elicitation methods, ethnographic methods,
participatory design methods, applied uses of agent or expert systems,
information search and retrieval, or information visualization.
