PostDoc position at Simula: Mixed reality in film making

About Simula:

Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institute located outside Oslo, Norway. It is a multi-cultural organization, employing about 130 individuals from 25 countries. Simula is conducts ICT research in the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering. Simula's main objective is to generate new understanding and create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This is achieved through high quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and commercialization.

Position:

Simula is seeking a Post-doctoral fellow who will be part of a project team exploring new ways of integrating post-production into on-set film making. This is done in close collaboration with industry and creative partners, and requires a hands-on approach to build real-world prototypes. The team seeks a talent in the field of mixed reality with a strong algorithmic background in signal processing.

The overall vision of this project is to provide tools to make the creative work process of multimedia artists more iterative, interactive and collaborative. We focus specifically on creative work for artists who produce non-interactive content that places human actors in separately recorded or created environments, e.g. for television, cinema, web platforms or video games and may extend to virtual worlds that allow freely moving spectators (free viewpoints).

Desired profile:

The candidate must have very good documented and proven knowledge in the area of experimental computer science and experience in mixed reality or 3D video processing. The candidate needs excellent theoretical skills in the field and must document strong programming skills through previous work. The team requires a strong practical focus, both in terms of algorithm design and development.

In the cross-disciplinary project team, the candidate is going to be a specialist in his/her field, working closely together in a team of researchers in networks, operating systems, parallel processing etc. Multimedia systems is accepted as the field that connects all of these disciplines. The interaction with industrial and artistic partners requires excellent communication skills and openness to adopt new ideas. The right candidate must have very good communication skills in English, and to present orally and in written form for a scientific audience and popular presentations.

The strong external collaboration combined with working prototypes is meant to yield opportunities for commercialization within and beyond the project period. As a Post-doctoral fellow, the candidate is expected to supervise and cooperate with master students. We provide the opportunity as well as support for applying for research funding or commercialization funding, which provides the opportunity for leading projects and supervising PhD students. There is no requirement for formalized teaching in class, but the opportunity exists.
