MULTIMEDIA INFORMATION RETRIEVAL
	- New Challenges in Audio Visual Search -

Website: http://www.yr-bcn.es/events/mir2007-workshop/

SIGIR workshop in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
July 27, 2007.

INTRODUCTION
This fifth workshop on Multimedia Information Retrieval will take
place in Amsterdam on July 27, 2007 in conjunction with SIGIR 2007.
This full-day workshop will have a special focus on “New Challenges
in Audio Visual Search”. With the rising popularity of rich media
services such as Flickr, YouTube, and Jumpcut, new challenges in
large scale multimedia information retrieval have emerged that not
only rely on meta-data but on content-based information retrieval
combined with the collective knowledge of users and geo-referenced
meta-data that is captured
during the creation process. For the future, it is envisioned that
multimedia search in mobile environments or on P2P networks will take
on off a large scale.
This workshop follows four previous SIGIR workshops on multimedia
information retrieval (1998, 1999, 2003, 2005), and aims to address
and explore new challenges in multimedia information retrieval by
bringing both researchers and practitioners together. We encourage
submission and participation in this workshop not only from the core
Information Retrieval community but also from researchers in
databases, multimedia and image processing thus cross-fertilizing to
information retrieval research.
We plan to organize a full day workshop with 3-4 theme oriented paper
sessions, and a brainstorm session at the end of the day on user
scenarios for multimedia retrieval in the new era. During the paper
sessions we aim to provide ample room for discussion. The brainstorm
session at the end of the day is planned to stimulate the interactive
character of the workshop, and to allow for the exchange of ideas
between academia and industry.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
The major topics of the workshop include but are not limited to:
- social media mining
- multimedia feedback models
- similarity search in P2P networks
- geographic image retrieval
- scalable multimedia retrieval
- high-dimensional indexing
- automated meta-data enrichment
- rich media annotation
- personal image management
- social networking for multimedia search
- query languages for multimedia retrieval
- user interaction and browsing
- event recognition
- content-based multimedia retrieval

IMPORTANT DATES

Notification of acceptance: June 12, 2007
Camera ready version: June 20, 2007
Workshop in Amsterdam: July 27, 2007

PAPER SUBMISSION
For this workshop we invite both researchers and practitioners in the
field to submit high-quality papers in the area of multimedia
information retrieval. Authors are invited to submit research and
position papers representing original, previously unpublished work to
the workshop. Please adhere to the following guidelines:

    1. Submissions must be in English.
    2. Submit new original research papers. Papers may not be
submitted to other venues concurrently with SIGIR.
    3. Papers must be submitted electronically, via the submission
page of the web-site.
    4. Please first register as a new author (unless you already have
registered into the system as a reviewer) and then follow the link
"Register paper".
    5. Submitted papers should be in the ACM Conference style, see
the ACM template page www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html,
using the "Option 2" style. This is also the style that will be
required for final papers. Papers must not exceed 8 pages in 9 point
font and be submitted as PDF files. Papers exceeding the limits will
be rejected without review.
    6. The review process is double-blind. Therefore, please
anonymize your submission. This means that all submissions must have
no author identifying information: do not put the author(s) names or
affiliation(s), and "anonymize" citations to your own prior work in
the paper.
    7. The exact time of the submission deadline is 12:00 at night
CET on May 25, 2007.
