Lots of useful suggestions here, but there has been no mention of
accessibility.
Pretty GUIs are worthless if they are not accessible. Deployment of
ECMAScript and its variants *can* be made accessible through a design
based on progressive enhancement, but it's not automatic - it has to
be intentionally built in.
