It's now twenty years since the first British HCI Group conference.

People continue to debate whether HCI is now a mature discipline
(or even whether we have moved beyond HCI). Either way, it's time
to stand back and take a good look at "The Bigger Picture".

Our theme, "The Bigger Picture", is open to wide and playful
interpretation, like HCI itself (does the "I" stand more for
Integration these days?

HCI2005 will bring together the many 'flavours' of HCI and allow
people to see what is important in areas such as mobile computing,
pervasive computing, user experience and the design of interactive
systems. By focusing on 'the bigger picture' HCI2005 will provide
a rich and varied perspective on the issues affecting people and
their interactions with digital technologies. Review papers are
welcome that chart the evolution of HCI concepts and techniques
to take account of the bigger picture that a 21st century HCI
has to address.

We invite both practitioners and researchers to join us to explore how
we can design products that enhance the lives of their users.

Submissions on all areas of HCI are invited, but we strongly
encourage submissions addressing the challenges and opportunities
posed by our theme, "The Bigger Picture".

Relevant topic areas include but are not limited to:
* large screens and tangible interfaces;
* pervasive computing;
* interaction techniques on the street;
* e-government;
* widening access to technologies;
* users with special needs;
* designing for different age groups;
* business models for mobile systems;
* designing across cultures and societies;
* HCI and other professional communities.

In addition, contributions which advance the theory or practice of
any aspect of HCI are welcomed.

The British HCI Conference Series:

HCI2005 is the 19th Annual Conference of the British HCI Group, a
specialist group of the British Computer Society. Established in 1985,
the conference has become the premier annual conference on
Human-Computer Interaction in Europe. Attracting hundreds of
researchers and practitioners from over twenty countries, its
published proceedings (The People & Computers series) form an important
part of the archive of HCI research.

In returning to Scotland in 2005 we particularly welcome the
involvement of the Nordic community, both as organisers and presenters,
and the conference flavour hopes to reflect the shared culture of nations
bordering the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The HCI conference has always addressed the needs of practitioners and
researchers through a balance of conference activities. Each annual
conference has a theme, but submissions on any HCI topic are always welcome.
