Call for participation - CHI 2015 Workshop: Leveraging and Integrating
Eastern and Western Insights into Human Engagement Studies in HCI*
*
This one-day workshop will be held as part of the CHI 2015 annual ACM
SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, held in Seoul,
Korea, 18-23 April 2015.

Important Dates:
- Submission by: 5th January 2015
- Notification of acceptance: 13th February 2015
- Workshop day: 18th or 19th April 2015

Workshop website: http://eastwest.xrenlab.com/

Human engagement is at the heart of every interactive technology. A
concrete framework for synergizing the capabilities of humans and
technologies to allow fully engaging interactions to happen is yet to be
developed. We posit that such a framework should be grounded in a deeper
understanding of human nature (e.g., mindbody relations), which in the
field of HCI has primarily been built upon the Western philosophies.
There are scattered, underexplored Eastern ideas (e.g., YiJing, Zen) or
"mindfulness" that may provide new lens and tools to analyze how humans
engage with technological artifacts.

This workshop aims to provide: (i) a learning venue where participants
can together explore existing Eastern knowledge insights, and how they
can be used to better understand human engagement and to draw
implications for designing technologies, and (ii) a discussion venue to
identify potentially new research and industrial opportunities open by
these new perspectives.

We invite contributors to submit papers addressing one or more of four
threads:
- theoretical (e.g. identifying promising Eastern frameworks)
- practical (e.g., analyzing methodologies of existing work)
- reflective (e.g. critique on the notion of human engagement) and
- programmatic (e.g., developing a research agenda).

Submissions should be of 2-6 pages ACM SIGCHI format. All submissions
will be reviewed by the organizers of its relevance to the proposed
theme. The paper in PDF file format should be sent via email to**Effie
Law**<[log in to unmask]>. Contributors will be asked to bring along an
A1-poster to facilitate
discussions.<http://ethicalencountershci.wordpress.com/>
