Description and Scope of the Book:

Media synchronization (mediasync) is getting renewed attention, as the densely heterogeneous and ubiquitous connected ecosystem of devices and people enables novel types of media experiences. It is certainly not a new research area, already studied since the early development of (distributed) multi-media systems. In order to overcome the “best-effort” nature of delivery networks and the imperfect behaviour of the involved devices, a number of reference models and synchronization techniques have been proposed, and several user perception studies have been published. These works have considered the different types of mediasync and a wide range of use cases, from video playback to mediated communications, under a variety of scenarios. 
The goal of this book is to provide an approachable overview that covers, from different angles, the most relevant advances and contributions in the broad mediasync area. In particular, the book will revisit the foundations of mediasync, will describe the different types of mediasync solutions and the most representative use cases, will review the existing technologies, formats and algorithms, and will compile the most relevant (QoS and QoE) evaluation methodologies and results. The book will also highlight current challenges, like hybrid broadband broadcast scenarios, multi-sensory experiences and user perception studies, to pave the way towards the future deployment of truly immersive and ultra-realistic media experiences. The final objective is to offer a comprehensive, solid and updated source of information about the theoretical, technological and experimental aspects in the field of mediasync that can be used as the reference guide by interested scholars and practitioners. 
The book will (tentatively) consists of the following sections:
- Theoretical foundations & Reference Models.
- Applications & Use Cases (e.g., TV, Multi-party Conferencing, Web, Virtual Environments, Games, Tele-presence).
- Delivery Technologies / Formats / Techniques (e.g., Broadband, Broadcast, Hybrid Delivery, Advanced Encoding/Delivery, Document Formats, Clock/Time Synchronization, Adaptive Transmission and Playout, Watermarking and Fingerprinting).
- Evaluation Methodologies and User Experience (e.g., Social TV, Audiovisual Communication, Multi-sensory Experiences, Crowdsourcing, Perception Thresholds).


Extended Abstract: Authors are requested to submit an extended abstract (up to 800 words) which clearly states the proposed topic and the relevance of its contribution. Authors should also include the tentative title, the list of authors, the Table of Contents (ToC), and the references on which the chapter will be based (especially, if it is a synthesis of existing scientific publications).
