Workshop Theme and Goals
------------------------
When designing mobile interfaces it is certainly important to consider
the users’ needs and intended experience. However, it is also vitalto
understand the needs of other stakeholders to ensure the delivery of
user centred mobile designs. Translating and communicating the mobile
user requirements to stakeholders and ensuring best practice is adhered
to can be problematic. This workshop aims to bring practitioners and
academics together to discuss methodologies to help overcome these
problems and other commercial limitations and deliver quality user
centred mobile designs. The workshop builds on the outcomes of
‘Observing Mobile User Experience’ workshop held at NordiCHI 2010
(http://omue10.offis.de).
By combining practitioners with academic researchers and mobile
industry experts, this workshop provides a valuable opportunity to
engage in rich applied discussions and formulate possible solutions to
implementation issues. This workshop addresses a common HCI theme of
how to ensure the design that is delivered is what the user needs and
wants. This is applied research in its most applied state – finding ways
for academia to assist industry get quality results.
Intended Audience
-----------------
We aim to bring together 15 to 20 researchers and practitioners from
different backgrounds. It is also planned to include representatives
from mobile manufacturers, such as Samsung or Nokia, to participate in
the afternoon's panel discussion. The workshop would benefit an audience
who have had to deal with various stakeholders in projects previously,
whether in academia or industry. The selection of participants will be
based on the quality and relevance of their submitted paper.
Topics
------
Topics of the workshop include, but are not limited to:
* Translating user knowledge to developers and design teams
* Methods for communicating user needs
* Incorporating more accessibility into the design process
* Practitioners not being involved in all stages of the product's design
* Client's belief that they know what their users need
* Limited development time frames and restricted budgets
* How to prove Return On Investment
* Client's lack of UCD knowledge and how it fits in the product life cycle
* Client's location causing communication issues (e.g. different time
zones, languages)
* Multi-cultural needs for scaling caused by multiple locations of clients
* Client's need for secrecy and non-disclosure restricting knowledge sharing
* The complexity of the mobile space
* Decision makers not being project team members
Submission details
------------------
Anyone interested in participating is invited to submit a 2-4 pages
position paper or an industrial case study to the workshop organizers.
Submissions of papers covering the topics of the workshop should be
submitted by 1st of May 2011, 5pm GMT. Submissions must include your
paper, based on the BCS template, and your completed copy of the BCS
license to publish, available on the same BCS webpage.
Notification of acceptance will be sent out 20th of May 2011. At
least one author from each accepted submission is expected to attend the
workshop.
