23rd June 2011 :: Shoreditch House, London, UK

** UPDATE** Ending the day with a studio tour of Shoreditch, with wine: See practioners at work in their natural surroundings. We will be visiting two studios: First visit will be to WilsonFletcher http://wilsonfletcher.com , Strategic digital design, London User Research Centre, and finishing the day will be a visit to Greyworld, creators of urban public art http://greyworld.org

keynote speaker Mortiz Waldemeyer

Our day will start with our keynote speaker Mortiz Waldemeyer, widely recognised as one of the most innovative and exciting designers of his generation. He has collaborated with many of the world’s top architects and fashion designers including Ron Arad, Zaha Hadid and Hussein Chalayan, next to working for a wide range of artists like U2, OK GO, Rhianna and Kylie Minogue. His work is a fusion of technology, art, fashion and design. See his latest interactive installation here: Hannah Martin Collaboration – The Man Who Knows Everything "My latest collaboration is with Hannah Martin – queen of the London urbanite jewellery scene and purveyor of architecturally bold pieces. The installation is centred around a three-sided twelve-foot obelisk strung with lasers, surrounding the most iconic piece of Martin’s collection. Visitors interacting with the sculpture can create their own soundscapes with the programmed lasers. The obelisk was manufactured from black corian which allowed the production of a seamless monolithic shape."

We will close with a guest panel of theorists and creative practitioners discussing issues raised through the day, before we head off for our design studio tour of Shoreditch for a drink and a chance to continue discussions in a more informal way.

Panel discussion: The everyday language of creative practice.

Academics, researchers and practitioners will debate the 'real world' pragmatics of doing interaction design projects:

Prof Stephen Scrivener Head of Research, Chelsea College of Art and Design

Nelly Ben Hayoun Designer/performer, graduate of the Royal College of Art’s Design Interactions MA

Elie Lakin Architect/designer, Jason Bruges Studios

Shane Walter director of onedotzero

Chaired by Michael Smyth, Edinburgh Napier University, co-author of Digital Blur

The Language of Creativity

The theme of this year’s symposium is designed to encourage discussion around the issues of how creativity is interpreted and used in collaborative and interdisciplinary interaction design projects. Critical to this dialogue is the involvement of both researchers and practitioners. The symposium will provide an opportunity to share project experiences and emerging themes in this hybrid field. Create11 will present examples of novel design practice, methods and ideas from both commercial and academic fields.
The 2011 event will be a one-day forum to discuss creative practice in interaction design. The programme will include speakers, presentations, quickfire showcases, a panel discussion and there will be more news on our studio visit soon too. The provisional programme is live now:more about the programme here

Venue: Shoreditch House

Shoreditch House is a private members’ club located in the heart of Shoreditch, London's creative design district, and is approximately a 10 minute walk from Liverpool Street Station. Opened in June 2007, Shoreditch House occupies the top three floors and roof of a renovated warehouse in London’s East End. Create11 will be taking place in the Biscuit Tin and Biscuit Pin rooms.
Lunch is included in the registration fee, as well as networking opportunities - or rather a chance to have a bit of a chat with some new people with similar interests over a coffee.
