ABB SOFTWARE RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM

The Industrial Software Systems program at ABB already collaborates with a number of academic research groups world-wide. In order to enlarge and complement the circle of university partners, we have launched the ABB Software Research Grant Program described below.

We plan to award several research grants between 20 000 and 80 000 USD for research on industrial software system. Applications should combine academic research with industrial application.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Topics and priorities include:

    * Usability tools for developers: What kind of development tools would help developers, who are no usability experts, to produce measurably better user interfaces?
    * Tacit knowledge transfer: How to capture process knowledge of experienced industrial process control operators and transfer it to beginners?
    * Truly wearable computer: How to design a minimal attention user interfaces for mobile work personnel that need both hands for primary work?
    * Interactive visualization of time-dependent data: How to interactively explore huge data sets in a meaningful way for passive monitoring and active control tasks?
    * Reverse engineering, architectural reconstruction, visualization of large scale code bases (C/C++, MFC, COM, C#): How to efficiently analyze legacy code for better decision taking?
    * Execution engines for IEC-61131-3 or other industrial application languages: How can the introduction of modern and/or domain specific languages improve predictability, execution and implementation of industrial applications?
    * Generating process graphics: How can process graphics for control and supervision systems be automatically generated from different models of industrial plants, also targeting different output devices, e.g. large screen displays, smart phones, and tablet devices?
    * Automation system security: How to increase automation system security in an industrial automation setting?

APPLICATION PROCESS
The application process consists of two rounds. The application for the first round is limited to two pages (A4, 12pt, PDF) and must include the following sections:

Application template for the second round: The full application is limited to eight pages (A4, 12pt, PDF) and must include the following sections:

    * Project title and requested amount of funding
    * Abstract
    * Context and motivation
    * Aims and objectives
    * Proposed method
          o Research method
          o How will success be measured?
          o How will progress be measured?
    * Execution plan
          o Resources
          o Time plan
    * Publication plan
    * What is the impact if successful?
    * Attachments: CVs of applicants

The application must be submitted by a main applicant who is a researcher associated with a university, university college, or research institute. The main applicant will be ABB's sole point of contact. The applicant as well as his/her research group must not currently be involved in activities with one or more ABB competitor.

EVALUATION PROCESS
Applications will be assessed by an ABB-internal evaluation committee. In the first round, a selection will be made in which the applications will be assessed solely with respect to how well they correspond to the topics above and the expected outcome of the project. After this all applicants will be informed if they are rejected or selected to submit for the second round.
