Applications are invited from *all nationalities *for a PhD Studentship to
undertake interdisciplinary research in the area of *automatic analysis of
affective and social behaviour*, starting *September/October 2012* *(dates
are negotiable)*.

The problem of automatic analysis of people's affective and social
behaviour is very important for multiple domains such as enhancing
human-computer and human-agent interaction, improving gaming technology and
players’ experience, behavioural analytics for the banking sector, etc.
Accordingly, the aim of this project is to attempt to develop tools that
can automatically analyse human affective and social signals from nonverbal
audiovisual cues (e.g., expressed through face and/or body gestures, and
vocal cues), and assess human affective and social traits (e.g., valence,
arousal, power, extraversion, agreeableness, etc.) using findings from social
sciences.

The studentship will be based at the School of Electronic Engineering and
Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London and will be supervised
by Dr Hatice Gunes of the Multimedia and Vision research group (
http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~hatice/) and Prof Andrea Cavallaro (
http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~andrea/ ) of the Vision Group research group.
Information about the school and its research areas can be found at
www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk.

Candidates should have a Master’s degree at distinction level or first or
upper second (2:1) Honours in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related
discipline, and must be able to demonstrate good analytical and programming
skills. Background in visual and audiovisual information processing,
machine learning or pattern recognition, and interest in multimodal data
fusion is desirable.

The studentship funded by the EECS Studentship will be for 3 years, and it
will cover student fees and a tax-free stipend starting at £15,590 per
annum, and is *available to candidates of all nationalities*.

Informal enquiries can be made by email to Dr Hatice Gunes (
